The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is a special taxing district that operates ten
branch libraries in Marin under the authority of the Board of Supervisors. MCFL’s mission is to provide welcoming, equitable and inclusive opportunities for all to connect, learn and explore. It delivers public library services to the residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax and Novato.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Library Assistant IIs provide day-to-day library services to patrons of all ages, including Library Assistant IIs provide day-to-day library services to patrons of all ages, including provision of basic reference and readers’ advisory, digital and information literacy instruction, and proactive customer service to enhance our ‘single desk’ model of service. They help lead improvement of branch materials handling; support programming, marketing and outreach to engage, empower and inspire Marin’s diverse communities; implement programs that help to close the academic achievement gap; and assign and review the work of some staff and volunteers. These positions are key to expanding innovative library services and 21st century learning.

Incumbents will serve communities with diverse backgrounds and abilities and will collaborate with school districts and community partners to anticipate and meet community needs.
These positions will include weekend and evening work hours.

Current Vacancies:
This recruitment will be used to fill multiple positions within the MCFL system:


  • Two (2) full-time regular-hire positions
  • Multiple part-time, on-call positions
The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill all future vacancies in regular-hire and on-call (contingent) positions that may occur while the list remains active. Eligible lists remain active for a minimum of six months.

ABOUT YOU

Our Highly Qualified Candidate: The highly qualified candidate has experience supervising in a library environment and a strong interest and commitment in providing support and advising patrons in a public library setting. In addition, the ideal candidate works effectively in both an independent and team environment; is able to apply strong organizational, planning, and problem solving skills in a rapidly changing environment; recognizes and respects cultural differences; has a firm commitment to addressing equity issues and improving the educational outcomes for children; and is passionate and enthusiastic about public library service and recognizes that the library is a place where information transforms lives.

Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English is highly desired.

We recognize your time is valuable, so please do not apply if you do not have at least the following required Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities listed in the class specification. Typically, equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of experience assisting patrons in a public or academic library. College coursework in library sciences may be substituted up to one year of the required experience.

Special Requirements: The successful candidate will be required to successfully complete a background investigation.

Testing and Eligible List: Depending on the number of qualified applications received, the examination may consist of a highly qualified review, application screening, online assessment, written examination, oral examination, performance examination, or any combination to determine which candidates' names will be placed on the eligible list.
The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies for open, fixed-term, full-time or part-time positions which may occur while the list remains active.

Important Information: Pursuant to the Order of the Marin County Public Health Officer, it is required that all County employees confirm their vaccination status. Depending on work assignment and applicable Public Health Order, some employees may be required to be fully vaccinated and/or consent to weekly COVID-19 testing. To help mitigate transmission, an Order of the Marin County Public Health Officer requires unvaccinated individuals to wear face coverings when indoors in workplaces and public settings.

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
