We are currently seeking a full-time Licensed HVAC Mechanic who will adhere to the aforementioned mission statement, and who will perform skilled technical work for the installation, operation, maintenance, service and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems ranging from a half-ton to one-thousand-ton capacity. The HVAC Licensed Mechanic inspects and tests both high- and low-pressure refrigerant systems to locate ad diagnose faults and malfunctions, performs required repairs through replacement of inoperative parts or adjustment of thermostatic controls and blowers and provides an estimate of repair (and/or replacement) costs beyond the capability to perform.

EDUCATION

Required: High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred: Associate’s Degree.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Required:

  • Ten (10) years successful experience in the HVAC trade; and,
  • Working knowledge of housing and building codes (provide proof of experience).
  • Class A or B license, with a minimum of a B.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES

Required:

  • Completion of a HVAC vocational/technical school or a recognized apprenticeship program in the HVAC trade.
  • Current HVAC License.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License with a 3-year safe driving record.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Certification.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform contractor level heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) work including the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of high- and low-pressure refrigerant systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair control devices and wiring within the HVAC primary system; maintain, repair, sand modify secondary refrigerant systems including pumps, valves, cooling, air moving equipment and local temperature/pressure controls.
  • Advise supervisor regarding the quantity and types of materials that should be ordered and stocked for use in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) projects.
  • Provide technical assistance for the purchase of new or replacement mechanical equipment or systems by reviewing and preparing equipment specifications, and advising the Maintenance Supervisor on equipment capability and compatibility, installation requirements and costs, and potential operations and maintenance expenses.
  • Assist with documentation associated with the cost of heating, ventilation and air conditioning maintenance repairs and services by ensuring labor hours are charged appropriately on the work order system, and provide periodic status reports to the supervisor.
  • Assist Property Manager with ensuring that contract heating, ventilation and air conditioning services meet specified results and/or work orders thus minimizing future operational problems by observing (spot checking) the work performed and advising the Maintenance Supervisor when contracted services fail to meet specifications or endanger Amarillo College property or lives.
  • Respond to maintenance issues across the East Campus housing.
  • Must be able to pull City Permits and Pass Inspections.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to maintain electronic test equipment and mechanical tools and keep accurate records on each piece of equipment indicating all required and performed maintenance.
  • Perform spot checks of equipment to determine working condition; schedule and supervise the periodic cleaning and servicing of tools and equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and electrical schematics.
  • Ability to work well with a team or independently.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of current HVAC codes and standards
  • Heating, Ventilation installation, maintenance, and repair skills.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Ability to lead others in troubleshooting and emergency repairs.
  • Ability to develop and implement planned maintenance programs.
  • Comply with city, state and federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal, and the use of refrigerants, chemical substances and materials.
  • Knowledge of housing and building codes

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, bend, climb, crouch, crawl, reach, pull, push, and use hands to finger, handle or feel. Must be comfortable with working in small confined spaces as required as well as working in a variety of inclement weather and climatic conditions. Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull and maneuver objects up to 30 pounds and maneuver heavier objects with assistance of others and/or appropriate equipment.


Schedule:
May be required to work a flexible schedule (days, nights, weekends, holidays, and various outside events if necessary.) Availability for on-call schedule for all maintenance.


Work Environment
: This position works in a very exposed environment. Exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. Constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous material, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and loud noises.

Salary: Amarillo College Staff Salary Schedule grade 13. Placement within the pay grade dependent upon candidate’s education, experience, credentials and skills.
