DIVISION:

The Excel Center for Adults, founded in 2014, is the first free public charter high school in Texas that provides adults ages 18-50 the opportunity to earn their high school diploma, complete an in-demand professional certification, and begin post-secondary education. The Excel Center offers programming that is specific to the adult learner experience such as accelerated academics and flexible scheduling, special programs, and resources, and supportive services to help students remove barriers they may encounter during their educational journey. Currently, The Excel center has three Austin-area campuses that serve both day and evening students in addition to four Justice Education campuses, located in Lockhart, Henderson, Overton, and Diboll, TX.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The primary role of the Life Coach at the Goodwill Excel Center is to promote continued student engagement, serve as a student advocate, support student learning, and provide resources to help alleviate barriers that may impede educational and socio-emotional progress. Responsible for a caseload that ranges between 65-110 students, the Life Coach will build empowering relationships with each student, hold coaching sessions, set goals, and implement strength-based strategies to facilitate ways in which students can overcome barriers and continue progress towards their diploma and post-grad career pathway. Life Coaches also work closely with other departments (Student Experience, Instructional, Learning Supports, Family Services, Mental Health, Operations etc.) at the Goodwill Excel Center to ensure students make successful transitions and receive wraparound support from point of entry through exit into a meaningful post-secondary avenue.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Guide students toward academic success through managing and monitoring student information (i.e. knowledge of credits, state testing, etc.), at times assisting in developing class schedules, and assisting students and Academic Advisors in planning for graduation.

2. Document all guidance interventions in an electronic database in a proactive, timely, and ethical manner that meets quality and quantity standards.

3. Facilitate students’ learning experiences through action-oriented individual and/or group coaching meetings to ensure student engagement and accomplishment of personal, academic, and career goals.

4. Coach students from a systemic, trauma-informed model that is strength-focused, student-driven, supportive and motivating, and that focuses on setting tangible, realistic and measurable goals.

5. Work collaboratively with students to develop detailed and regularly updated Personal Graduation and Career Plans to identify career goals and action steps.

6. Implement attendance and retention strategies that are designed for individual student relevance that are hands-on, involve contextual learning, experiential education, and include proactive intervention, wraparound support-building, community referrals, and daily (often in person) interactions with each student.

7. Intervene proactively and in a positive manner to address student behavioral needs that arise through early-identification of potential risk factors, collaboration with staff, facilitation of restorative meetings, monitoring of behavioral planning, and encouragement of pro-social and career-ready student behavioral.

8. Develop and implement student incentives and creative engagement strategies that recognize key educational/career/personal milestones to increase student buy-in and academic success.

9. Collaborate with instructors to develop student individual learning plans based on intake and ongoing benchmark assessments.

10. Provide support, work closely, and maintain open communication with leadership, staff, and students to support student success.

11. Collaborate with Student Experience Team to ensure the successful transition of applicants to fully enrolled students and integration of students into the Excel Center environment.

12. Initiate and maintain contact with key community partners (community agencies, educational institutions, and employers) to enhance the array of support services provided to applicants

to assist with the removal of barriers and to support academic and/or personal goals.

13. Coordinate with key community support persons for students (i.e. family members, friends, mentors, etc.) to build and sustain a network that will reinforce student progress.

14. Facilitate transitions with students by moving them efficiently and thoroughly toward graduation via their individualized pathway and coordinating with other school staff to ensure continuum of support pre and post-graduation.

15. Use personal vehicle to conduct home visits to students/family members in community, coordinate and document in-person referrals for wraparound care, and periodically transport students according to policy guidelines.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist school team with outreach efforts and community integration events throughout the school year (periodically nights and weekends).

2. Provide assistance, proctoring, and support for annual state testing administration.

3. Work collaboratively on Life Coaching District Team which may involve providing in person or remote support to or carrying caseloads from other campuses (South & North Austin & Justice Education Campuses).

4. Attend all team and professional meetings.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Associate degree or two years’ experience working with marginalized populations in an educational setting.

2. Valid Driver’s License, up to date auto insurance and good driving record.

3. Must be able to understand work instructions in English.

4. Must have a framework for understanding socioemotional, behavioral, and educational trends related to providing key student supports in an adult-academic setting.

5. Must have working knowledge of computer programs and accessing internet applications such as Student Information Systems, Microsoft Office Products, Google Applications (Gmail), Excel, Microsoft Word, and Internet Explorer.

6. Knowledge of community resources.

7. Must possess superior verbal and written communication skills.

8. Must be self-motivated willing to be a team player.

9. Must be adaptable to shifting priorities while maintaining a positive learning environment.

10. Strong socioemotional and behavioral intervention skills.

11. Must have the ability to embrace change positively and manage their workload independently.

12. Ability to gather and analyze data for informed decision making.

13. Ability to develop relationships and to relate to a diverse population.

14. Must possess the essential mindset that all students can achieve at high levels.

15. Must possess understanding of marginalization and how it impacts those Goodwill serves and employs.

16. Exhibit respect for diversity of thought and have experience to advance it in teams/organization.

17. Must demonstrate a maturity of practice using the 7 pillars and principles of servant leadership.

18. Must be able to successfully pass a background check and complete fingerprinting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Education, Adult Education, School Counseling or related area of study.

2. Experience working with high school age students in urban, non-traditional, and/or adult education setting.

3. Experience working with adult learners.

4. Bilingual in Spanish or Arabic and English.

5. Perform other related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Starting at $41,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
