Job description
We Are:
Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, CERN in Europe and the South Pole.
We are strategic risk takers, innovators, and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are 1,800 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 40 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.
Fermilab’s Scientific Computing Division is seeking a Linux System Administrator. This position will support computing resources for a variety of high-energy physics experiments at Fermilab and at the CERN laboratory in Europe. This currently includes over 3500 systems used by a range of applications for data acquisition and analysis, supporting the work of thousands of physicists, students, and engineers from all over the US and the world.
This person will be involved in design and support for:
- High-performance computing clusters
- Large-scale data storage systems

- Obtain user requirements and feedback on assigned system and service projects.
- Contribute to plans for the evolution of systems and services, including security, capacity, and logistical planning.
- Participate in projects to maintain low-level software services and implement new ones, including virtual clusters and platforms for software containers.
- Work with the Network Services group to design and implement networking for clusters and other groups of servers.
- Provide support for computing hardware throughout its life cycle, from helping to specify new hardware, to physical installation and operating system configuration, to troubleshooting and coordinating repairs, to eventual retirement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Contribute optimally within a diverse workforce and uphold Fermilab’s dedication to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
