Job description

The Miami Herald is looking for an editor with a passion for investigative journalism and the ability to elevate the work of a talented team of local reporters.

This editor will supervise some of our premier local beats, including the cities of Miami and Miami Beach. Watchdog work is the core of this team’s mission, and we seek an editor who is hungry to dig deeper and deliver journalism with impact.

This editor should have the instincts and skills to identify our strongest prospects for high-relevance, high-impact local reporting. Our goal is not to chronicle governments in action, but to hold those governments accountable on the issues that matter most to our readers.

This position is critical to the Miami Herald’s longstanding tradition of dynamic investigative reporting. This editor can expect to collaborate closely with other editors in our newsroom, including our investigations editor.

Responsibilities

  • Guide reporters to deliver aggressive accountability journalism, both short and long term.

  • Be ruthless about cutting down on “should-do” stories that don’t have an audience and focus the team on pursuing “must-read” stories.

  • Edit for readers by ensuring that we have active, engaging headlines and story framing that makes clear why each story matters.

  • Monitor and act on audience metrics to guide story decisions and grow audience.

  • Give clear direction to reporters on the front end and constructive feedback on the back end.

  • Experiment and innovate with alternative and multimedia storytelling and audience outreach strategies.

  • Collaborate early with visual and audience teams.

  • Be committed to reflecting the diversity of our community in our coverage.

Qualifications

  • Five years of daily news reporting and/or editing with at least some of that time covering/editing local government and political topics.

  • A track record of leadership and working with a team of daily news reporters.

  • Experience with digital publishing, online metrics and reader engagement.

Job requirements

  • Generally a day shift, but flexibility is required. This position will include a Friday night editing shift and may occasionally require other nights, weekends and holidays as part of newsroom editing rotations.

  • While the position is based in Miami, there will be flexibility in workplace arrangement.

  • Long periods of keyboarding.

  • Personal transportation to get to community events or meetings when necessary.

  • Proficiency with basic AP style and a strong command of spelling, grammar and punctuation.

  • Understanding of and adherence to professional journalism standards for balanced, fair and accurate reporting.
