To perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual tasks in the construction and maintenance of building, parks, parkways, assessment districts, streets, and related facilities.

This is the entry-level class in the Maintenance Division. Positions assigned to this class work under immediate supervision in the performance of a wide variety of routine unskilled to semi-skilled building, park, parkways, street, and assessment districts maintenance tasks. Generally, work is observed and reviewed during performance and upon completion, and changes in procedures or exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they arise.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Immediate supervision is provided by higher-level maintenance personnel.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assist in servicing heating and air conditioning units.

Assist in painting of City buildings and facilities.

Assist in changing light bulbs.

Assist in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry repairs and maintenance.

Clean and care for tools and equipment.

Assist in the maintenance of turf areas by mowing, edging, fertilizing, spraying, and watering.

Care for shrubs and trees by weeding, watering, and fertilizing.

Assist in pruning trees using hand saws and chain saws.

Assist in planting and removing trees.

Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of sprinkler systems.

Control weeds by hand pulling, whipping, and spraying.

Empty trash containers.

Rake leaves, clean walks, fields, courts, and other facilities; load trimmings on trucks.

Maintain tools and equipment.

Pick up rubbish and paper; perform general grounds cleaning.

Perform routine street maintenance duties.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

One year of experience performing duties of a nature similar to those performed by a Maintenance Helper.

The ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful performance of required duties.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver license and legally required vehicle insurance. Must also be able to meet driving record standards set by the city's driving policy.

Knowledge of:
Common landscaping and gardening tools, equipment, and maintenance methods.

Methods employed in basic laboring and maintenance work.

How to operate power equipment safely.

Horticulture.

Basic carpentry, plumbing, and electricity.

Basic knowledge of asphalt and concrete.

Ability to:
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Perform unskilled to semi-skilled tasks in the construction and maintenance of public works and/or parks related facilities.

Perform heavy physical labor.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

To correct problems before they become bigger.

Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties, including the performance of strenuous labor and the lifting of heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Also includes bending, reaching, and standing for long periods of time.

MILEAGE PAY: Any employee may be reimbursed for work related mileage at 54 cents per mile when assigned to use their private vehicle on City business.

SOCIAL SECURITY: The City does not participate in Social Security, and does not deduct Social Security payments from any employee's salary. The City does deduct 1.45% of salary for Medicare & makes a 1.45% matching contribution.
