Function

This position is responsible to repair/correct minor maintenance problems and conduct weekly inspections of the Hampton Sheriff’s Office correctional facilities

Performs duties under the direct supervision of the Work Force/Work Release Coordinator and is accountable for use of delegated authority.

Pursuant to §15.2–1603 of the Code of Virginia incumbent is appointed at-will and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff. This position is non-exempt.

Examples of Work

  • Demonstrates positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions
  • Report all maintenance problems and reports them to the Work Force/Work Release Coordinator or Commander of Corrections
  • Reports major repair problems to the Commander of Corrections
  • Supervises inmates in daily maintenance duties and special projects as assigned by the Work Force/Work Release Coordinator
  • Issues janitorial supplies for HCJ and HCCC
  • Documents supply requisitions and work order requests
  • Ensures all maintenance issues are addressed in a timely manner
  • Maintains up to date files to track maintenance issues
  • Contacts outside repair agencies as needed
  • Inspects completed maintenance and security projects to insure that they meet the needs of the Office

· Makes minor repairs · Conducts a monthly inventory of tools

  • Dependable and meets acceptable attendance requirements at all times
  • Protects confidential information by preventing unauthorized release, both verbal and/or writing
  • Performs all duties of a corrections deputy when needed
  • Disseminates information as it is given by the Department’s Administration

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of procedures for reporting maintenance problems to the proper city department (i.e. General Services)
  • Ability to make minor repairs/adjustments to facility equipment (i.e. cell bars, light fixtures, etc.)
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of use of force techniques and ability to use force when applicable
  • Appropriate use of firearms and other facility issued or approved equipment
  • Ability to skillfully and safely use firearms and other facility issued or approved equipment
  • Ability to read and comprehend laws, ordinances and orders
  • Maintain composure under adverse conditions such as public harassment, critical injuries, and death
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials and citizens from a variety of racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds
  • Present evidence in court effectively; skillful in observation and remembering details
  • Ability to supervise, organize and review the work of subordinates
  • Supervise and train deputy sheriffs in corrections
  • Interpret and explain policies and procedures
  • Act rationally and calm under stressful situations
  • Utilize good public relations skills
  • Use good leadership skills
  • Prioritize tasks
  • Properly operate authorized city vehicles and equipment
  • Analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine proper cause of action
  • Understand legal rights of inmates, maintain inmates safety and security
  • Supervise emergency situations
  • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals
  • Perform life-saving and rescue procedures
  • Make sound decisions
  • Give and follow commands, following through when needed
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of one year experience in the corrections field. Some maintenance experience preferred (i.e. carpentry, electrical, locksmith)
