We are welcoming applicants to apply for our Transportation Operator II/Maintenance Operator position located at our Arlington Primaries Area Headquarters in Arlington County, VA. Multiple positions may be filled through this job advertisement.

We are seeking individuals interested in joining our team who are able to operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/attachments) and perform manual labor.

As a Maintenance Operator, you will:
  • respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
  • attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
  • demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
  • participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
  • complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to obtain Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
  • Demonstrated experience in equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities .
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid CDL or CDL Permit.
  • Experience with heavy manual labor and heavy equipment operation.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
  • Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.

Special Requirements
Applicants selected for an interview that have a CDL will be required to perform a skills demonstration during interview process.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
