About the Position

Maintenance Crew members play a key role in making the Zoo a pleasant and enjoyable place for our guests and animals by providing maintenance for facilities, rides and vehicles. They provide thoughtful and responsive customer service to internal (i.e. co-workers) and external (vendors, park visitors, contractors etc.) guests while enjoying the fresh air and scenic splendor of our 100 acre property. They demonstrate excellent judgement in all activities and positive leadership skills when completing projects while supervising Maintenance Helpers.

Essential Job Duties

  • Performs routine and assigned maintenance per A.N.S.I, manufacturer and Oakland Zoo Maintenance Department standards
  • Supports with projects related to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, welding, painting and/or carpentry
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned

Who You Are

  • Have at least 2 years of experience (or equivalent education) in professional maintenance
  • Skilled in safe use of tools and equipment associated with mechanical, electrical, plumbing and welding trades
  • Basic knowledge of general construction in some or all of the above areas
  • Possess excellent judgement and the ability to follow detailed instructions
  • Able and willing to learn Aerial Systems (Gondola and Sky Ride) as well as other mechanical rides in The Zoo
  • Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Able to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Over 18 years of age
  • Have a valid Class C Driver’s License with a clean DMV record (able to obtain authorization to drive from Zoo’s insurance provider)

  • Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Able to work outside in all weather conditions, sometimes in or around significant dirt and dust
  • Able to bend and twist, lift, stand, kneel, sit, walk, bend, stoop and speak regularly and for 8-hour shifts
