Under general supervision of the Superintendent or designee, the Maintenance Technician performs journey level work in at least one trade and skilled work in the repair, alteration, construction, and maintenance of school buildings, equipment and facilities, and does related work as required. The Maintenance Technician may perform assigned duties independently or may direct the work assigned to Maintenance I workers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Identify and diagnose maintenance problems with plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems; refers those issues requiring journey-level repairs to appropriate Senior Maintenance staff.
• Performs skilled maintenance and construction work in a variety of building crafts such as carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, HVAC, roof systems and concrete.
• Participates in a continuous preventive maintenance program, in emergency repairs and in new construction.
• Services and makes repairs to lighting, fans, compressors, pumps, equipment and motors; replaces or rebuilds malfunctioning or worn parts; performs heating and boiler maintenance in conformity with safety standards and regulations; makes minor electrical, communication system, and lock repairs; installs glass windows; removes and lays tile; welds; makes repairs to furniture, cabinets and walls.
• Cleans, repairs, treats and maintains all components of the high school swimming pool.
• Gives technical advice to other maintenance and custodial staff.
• Inspects completed jobs of staff and outside vendors.
• Operates heavy equipment and numerous power and hand tools.
• May work with grounds and site custodial staff on assigned projects.
• Handles hazardous chemicals.
• Performs assigned duties in a safe manner.
• Performs cost estimates of proposed projects.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS /REQUIREMENTS: (At time of application)KNOWLEDGE OF/ABILITY TO:

• Standard practices of one or more of the building crafts, including materials, tools and procedures.
• The alteration, repair and construction of buildings, equipment, and facilities.
• Mechanical principles related to motor.
• Read, write and speak English sufficiently to successfully perform required duties.
• Hear, speak and write to receive and exchange information.
• Read and follow label directions when using any materials and/or equipment.
• Exercise extreme caution when using hazardous materials and/or equipment by adhering to the specified warnings.
• Assist with and perform skilled tasks in the building trades.
• Design and/or fabricate required parts or forms.
• Work independently.
• Use power and hand tools and equipment safely.
• Give instructions to others.
• Work cooperatively with others.
• Operate a forklift.
• Maintain insurability to drive a District vehicle.
• Maintain current knowledge as changes occur to building codes, work standards, procedures, materials and best practices.
• Operate a computer in support of maintenance functions (i.e. email, research parts and materials, prepare and complete work order forms, etc.)
• Adhere to safe work practices.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or equivalent. Additional related experience and/or training that would indicate possession of the above skills and abilities.
• Any combination equivalent to two years of increasingly responsible experience in one or more of the building crafts preferred.
• Possess, and maintain current as a condition for ongoing employment, a Class C California driver license.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Physical strength/agility sufficient to perform a wide variety of frequent physical tasks including moving equipment/furniture and operating equipment.
• Lift 50 pounds frequently; carry, climb, stoop, kneel, bend, crawl, reach, push, pull, walk and perform demanding physical tasks.
• Indoors and outdoors work environment; subject to noise from equipment operation; regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors, which may require use of protective equipment; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work.
• Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized equipment, hand and power tools; seeing observe needed and completed repairs; climbing ladders and working from heights; reaching overhead and horizontally to shelve and retrieve items in high places; standing for extended periods of time; bending at the waist.
• Sufficient skills to be licensed by the State of California to operate a motor vehicle.
• Successful passage of post-hire/pre-employment physical required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.14 - $42.52 per hour

Schedule:

• 8 hour shift
• Day shift
• Monday to Friday
• No weekends
