Overview: Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is searching for a driven individual for the Manager for Belonging and Culture position. The Manager for Belonging and Culture will work closely with the Associate Dean for Culture, Associate Dean for Health Equity, and the DEI/Culture Coordinator to oversee Culture, DEI, and Wellness initiatives that are central to advancing the mission of the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed). These initiatives include a focus on promoting a climate of psychological safety, equity, diversity, inclusiveness, recognition, and engagement— along with supporting optimal organizational and individual well-being. The focus of this position is internal facing with opportunities for collaboration with the Program Specialist for Health Equity and Community Affairs to enhance external-facing community partnerships.
Responsibilities:
- Provide guidance in the strategic planning, development, execution, management, and evaluation of Culture, DEI, Wellness, and Belonging strategies, while providing guidance to senior leadership and managers throughout the organization.
- Develop, implement, and effectively communicate initiative updates with the input of key partners (HR, Communications, SAC, FAC, etc.) and leadership.
- Collaborate across WMed to understand key strategic workstreams, priorities and deliverables for Culture, DEI, and Wellness.
- Coordinate regular reviews of policies and practices related to Culture/DEI/Wellness strategic priorities.
- Oversee Culture Champions Initiatives across faculty, staff, students, and residents.
- Lead expansion of Rewards & Recognition Program to emphasize new Culture/DEI priorities.
- Oversee implementation and management of forums/platforms (in-person/social media) for increasing connectivity among WMed community members including students, residents, faculty, staff, patients and other stakeholders.
- Manage resource creation for Culture, Wellness & DEI initiatives.
- Manage Culture/DEI budget.
- Manage and create reports regarding Culture/DEI/Wellness initiatives for the organization.
- Partner in monitoring DEI assessment tools and metrics to support organizational DEI goals.
- Manage a consolidated system to track attendance/engagement across Wellness, Culture, DEI programming.
- Promote transparent and effective communications regarding program progress, challenges and decisions, ensuring ongoing communication within the organization of Culture/DEI/Wellness initiatives and actions.
- Manage strategic priorities to increase employee retention at WMed.
- Availability to work on weekends and evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
- Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
- Establish and provide guidance to student affinity groups and employee resources groups (ERGs).
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- A Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 5 years of related experience in the areas of culture, wellness, diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and belonging. Advanced education may count toward years of experience.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in guiding organizational culture initiatives and program development and outreach efforts related to culture, DEI, and wellness.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS: *
The ideal candidate will have experience in a university environment or other complex organizational setting, a track record of success moving culture/DEI/wellness goals forward in an organization, a demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively on multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience with event and project management, including creating and conducting training and development initiatives. In addition, preferred candidates will have:
- Content familiarity and a commitment to stay current on issues pertaining to culture, DEI, and wellness
- Strong project management skills and ability to track details across multiple complex projects
- Ability to engage in strategic planning processes
- Ability to coordinate/facilitate workgroups
- Strong written/verbal interpersonal and communication skills, including presentations and public speaking skills
- Knowledge of assessment and evaluation methods
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, understanding the needs of various stakeholders
- Ability to listen to others and maintain professionalism and confidentiality with sensitive information
- Ability to role model exemplary ethical and professional behaviors and the medical school’s values for faculty, students, residents, and staff
- Ability to listen, foster teamwork, and accept accountability
- Ability to meet assigned deadlines

WMed Health is the clinical practice of the medical school with more than 300 providers offering comprehensive primary care and specialty services in several locations throughout Kalamazoo, Portage, and Battle Creek. The Department of Pathology faculty serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.
The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo serves as the primary educational facility with faculty and administrative offices, student study and social spaces, team-based learning halls, a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, basic science research labs, as well as toxicology and forensic pathology labs.
