Position Summary

Oversees management, strategy, and direction of WCMC database, cloud, and hybrid-cloud solutions. This position manages a team of highly technical engineers that designs and build solutions with the necessary documentation for a smooth transition to service operations. Also manages cost recoveries, budgets, and procurement decisions as it relates to technologies, solutions, and services under management. This position works closely with peers and senior leadership to ensure security, compliance, performance, service level agreements, operating level agreements and operational standards are in place and adhered to. The role also works with business unit leadership and IT Liaisons to understand the business outcomes of solutions/services, and with domain architects, direct reports, vendors, and external service providers to understand, propose and deploy capabilities to enable our mission. The manager tracks service KPIs and partners with Service Operations to drive ongoing improvements in service delivery performance.

Job Responsibilities

  • Establishes, matures, and oversees architecture and engineering best practices for cloud, databases, and services under management.
  • Continually explores emerging cloud and database technologies, conducts proof-of-concepts, and builds prototypes to determine institutional relevance and viability.
  • Participates in business and technology strategic planning processes and guides business and technical capability initiative roadmaps.
  • Establishes guidelines for application sizing and capacity planning. Reviews trending data. Proposes alternative architectures and solutions to improve end user experience at lower TCO.
  • Builds relationships with internal customers and partners to understand their needs, priorities, roadmap, and definition of success.
  • Develops, proposes, and maintains service descriptions, service catalog, service-level agreements (SLAs), Operating Level Agreements (OLAs), budgets and recoveries for services under management.
  • Ensures services operate at an optimal level, are test frequently to meet continuity standards and are always secure.
  • Guides continuous improvement efforts for the service by leveraging KPIs and customer feedback.
  • Manages a team of direct reports with experience in designing and building solutions. Provides professional growth opportunities and guidance. This also includes effort allocation and effort logging to optimize staff utilization.
  • Manages small scale projects to success. This includes planning, executing, and reporting status to a variety of audience.
  • Serves as an advocate for cloud and database technologies and participates in the center of excellence.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree

Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (Computer Science or related field preferred), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience with managing small scale projects to success.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience with DevOps.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience with database technologies such as MySQL and Postgres.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience with cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with traditional on-premise IT systems and architecture.
  • Minimum of 5 years with driving solutions that meet business needs.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with managing a team of solution driven IT engineers.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with managing vendor relationships.
  • Demonstrable familiarity with operating systems (Linux & Windows), networking and security technologies.
  • Experience in leading cross-functional IT initiatives.
  • Understanding of emerging technologies.

Licenses and Certifications

  • ITIL Foundation Certification.
  • AWS Architect (preferred).

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Position requires working in an office environment where some physical discomforts such as dust, dirt, noise, and the like are present. Ability to work off-hours and weekends, as well as travel between office locations, primarily within NYC and Ithaca, New York, is required. Occasional meetings or clinical staff interactions in typical patient care areas may be required, though direct patient exposure is not expected.
  • You will have exposure and/or access to protected health information (“PHI”) and personally identifiable information (“PII”) as part of your normal duties. Access to data within systems that contain significant portions of confidential medical records will be necessary to do your job; however, viewing of that information in individual detail is generally incidental.
  • With regard to HIPAA and related regulations protecting student, staff, and patient privacy, it is the responsibility of each Weill Cornell Medicine employee to limit viewing of PHI and PII to the absolute minimum as necessary to perform the job function.
