The Materials manager will provide a broad knowledge base related to raw materials. The manager will be responsible for the development and administration of the Materials Engineering Group, the planning and execution of assigned programs, projects and activities, and the growth of the department capabilities and competencies. This position will lead a small but talented team of research chemists and engineers in developing and qualifying world class materials and processes that enhance the performance of C&D/Trojan’s products.
Job Description
Area of Focus
This position is part of the Technology organization responsible for the evaluation, development, testing, and qualification of materials used within lead-acid and lithium batteries and other associated components. Conceives, organizes, and carries out experimental and analytical programs/studies as part of larger research programs or as a stand-alone study.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the test and performance evaluation of a wide variety of raw materials, components, and assemblies across all C&D/Trojan products including polymers, lead, coatings, additives, and adhesives.
  • Lead the design and execution of experiments to uncover underlying chemical and physical changes, identification of failure mechanisms, and iterate to expand fundamental understanding of the physical and chemical interactions of the different battery components.
  • Apply statistical methods to analyze materials and processing data for qualifying alternate materials and document results in technical reports, conference, journal papers, and/or presentations.
  • Evaluate supplier information, specifications, and validation data to ensure the selection of the best suppliers and compliance to C&D/Trojan specifications.
  • Initiate, develop, and apply new approaches, methods, and possibly instrumentation, for characterizing battery materials.
  • Responsible for the creation, utilization, and maintenance of functional specifications, material specifications, and test procedures.
  • Work with cross-company teams of diverse backgrounds to discover and communicate knowledge for the long-term development of next generation battery materials and validate through testing.
  • Leads root cause analysis in the resolution of any tooling or plastic test failures; reviews the analysis with the appropriate engineering management resources to resolve any particularly difficult problems.
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Materials Sciences, Chemistry, or similar.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience preferred; 3 year supervisory.
  • Exhibit a diverse knowledge of materials and their manufacturing techniques including plastics, rubber, coatings, and adhesives is highly desired.
  • Extensive experience in operating a diverse range of materials testing equipment, including sample preparation machines, FTIR, DSC, TGA, optical and electronic microscopes, and X-ray CT.
  • Experience of working with hazardous materials with a willingness to exhibit and promote health and safety across the team.
  • Broad experience of working and leading cross functional teams to drive product and specification development.
  • Must be able to effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload, meet deadlines, and manage time independently.
  • Must possess ability to work with only general instruction
  • Ability to engage and communicate effectively (written and verbal) with stakeholders at all levels
  • Strong skills with MS Office applications Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Logical problem solver, and self-motivated

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with lead-acid battery materials a plus
