Responsibilities:Job Description Summary
The Manufacturing & Innovation Engineer is a corporate employee that manages and leads capacity expansion and innovation projects across the company. This role includes understanding the business need for capacity expansion, the intended transformation and process flow for new items, identifying potential manufacturing solutions, evaluating and selecting assets to best meet the business need, retaining 3rd parties to design, cost and execute projects, owning the budgeting and capital request process and leading Commissioning/Qualification/Verification (CQV) in our operations. This role may require interactions with 3rd party contract manufacturers in partnership with R&D to understand their proposed solutions and evaluate the feasibility and fit of what is proposed.

Tasks and Responsibilities*

  • Develop a deep understanding of our products, production platforms, asset base, process flow and transformations
  • Partner with R&D to understand the product innovation pipeline and identify places where they need help identifying manufacturing solutions/improved capability as part of innovation activity
  • Partner with plant managers to identify production capacity utilization constraints/limitations and where capacity or capability is or may be needed to support business growth, financial optimization, or new products
  • Join chartered capacity and innovation project teams where your contribution is needed – either proactively or at the request of others
  • Identify, research, select and where relevant adapt machine and equipment design to accommodate factory and production improvements and new product innovation including preparation of cost justification and capital request documents.
  • Make recommendations for commercializing new technologies supported by industry data and vendor trials/tests
  • Engage and manage 3rd party vendors to identify manufacturing solutions, test manufacturing solutions, complete engineering and cost estimates that are appropriate for the project stage (feasibility studies, definition, design), manage construction and installation and supporting CQV and start ups
  • Collaborate with manufacturing personnel and cross-functional teams to commercialize new products/processes. This includes:
  • Represent the plant and manufacturing in plant trials (which are typically led by R&D but use plant assets and so manufacturing/engineering representation is needed in the trial plan review and trial execution)
  • Own CQV plans and success criteria in partnership with R&D and operations to ensure new products, processes and equipment are transitioned through each phase successfully to integrate items into going operations
  • Prepare and maintain updated task level project plans. Actively participate in project team meetings, and providing status updates including project plans and milestones
  • Write reports and effectively communicate results to the project team and stakeholders
  • Partner with R&D in their development of material and mass balance calculations for new products, process improvement projects and the introduction of new production systems
  • Design and execute experiments and prepare results for review
  • Maintain accurate and complete records

Qualifications:Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • BS in Engineering required; Mechanical or Chemical Engineering preferred. Advanced degrees a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years of applicable experience required
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects independently
  • Flexibility to handle and manage both long-term development projects and short-term troubleshooting needs
  • Ability to work through and solve complex problems
  • Strong computer and communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to constructively interact with colleagues from a wide variety of roles within the company
  • Overnight travel – 33% of the time on average, but occasionally more in spurts during product testing or CQV execution
