Howmet Aerospace Structures is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to support the development and control of Titanium forging, rolling and heat treatment processes. The primary function of this role is to work with the team responsible for development, implementation, and control of best practices in the forging, rolling and thermal processing of aerospace-grade Titanium alloys. This position is located at the Howmet Aerospace Niles, OH facility.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize risk assessment and 6 Sigma methodology to develop robust manufacturing, procedures, and training. The goal is to have resources focus on improving process capability, implementing SPC and other key metrics at the work center level.
  • Define/recommend and justify new technology by working with facility engineering, maintenance, and operations teams. This position will be hands-on, be engaged mainly on the shop floor, and not hindered by administrative tasks. The qualified candidate will focus on a very specific process/task, implement KPIs, then move on to the next work center/process.
  • Through significant presence in the forge shop, rolling mill and downstream operations, the engineer will partner with Operations to ensure adherence to process standards as well as provide independent technical oversight.
  • Assist in qualification efforts for new equipment and processes. This includes the development of the qualification plan, leading the risk analysis exercise, developing milestone plan and assuming ownership of the project management activities.
  • Carry out root cause investigation / corrective action efforts for product and process failures associated with manufacturing processes. Follow generally accepted engineering practices for root-cause analysis. Provide documentation of follow-through on the corrective actions to ensure that they are sustained.
  • Identify opportunities for waste elimination and cost reduction, while maintaining and improving product quality and consistency. Lead team-based improvement projects. Ensure complete transparency through periodic report-outs and phase gate reviews.
  • Provide cross-functional support to the hourly and salary team.
  • Drive variation reduction with involvement from the entire team and report out on metrics.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 3+ Years’ experience in process/manufacturing engineering. Specialty metals industry experience preferred.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or higher preferred
  • Certification in lean manufacturing preferred
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team atmosphere. Ability to manage multiple and complex tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Possess good problem solving and troubleshooting skills for supporting all aspects of the process engineering infrastructure.
  • Intermediate to Advanced skill level in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. SAP experience a plus.
