Overview:
Jhpiego's Maternal and Newborn Health team sits within the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent (RMNCAH) division within TLI. The MNH team is a diverse group of clinical and program experts with deep experience in technical leadership and collaborative health system support in low-, middle-, and high-income countries across five continents, including fragile and conflict areas. Our team values and prioritizes collaboration with our field-based colleagues and local stakeholders, recognizing the critical importance of health system factors and quality of care in the success of interventions and sustained improvements. We are actively engaged in a wide range of global technical leadership and implementation research activities across the continuum of care.

The Maternal Newborn Health (MNH) Advisor will provide support to the MNH team, particularly in the areas of translating global guidance into recommended health system actions, performing critical reviews of current evidence, compiling and/or developing written guidance and materials, developing research protocols, and contributing to manuscript development. The position will engage with cross cutting teams including family planning, quality improvement, innovations, health systems strengthening, community, and gender, and adolescent and youth health. Responsibilities include providing leadership and technical guidance in the development and implementation of global and country programs; utilizing cross-cutting approaches such as health system strengthening, performance and quality improvement, community development and in-service training/pre-service education; ensuring the technical and methodological soundness of Jhpiego’s MNH programs at the country level and; in collaboration with partners, supporting the design of clinical service delivery strategies, based on sound and current scientific evidence.

This is a hybrid role that can be based out of our Baltimore or Washington, DC office.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead technical writing and editing for maternal newborn health products, including but not limited to implementation research protocols, job aids, presentations, abstracts, manuscripts, program reports, and technical briefs
  • Review, support, and/or develop new products and approaches in maternal and newborn health
  • Support the documentation of program and research results for submission to international conferences and peer-reviewed journals and publications
  • Collaborate with key MNH global partners including WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, FIGO, and ICM in the development of materials, evidence briefs, and other strategic guidance
  • Work closely with in-country research partners to draft research protocols and prepare applications to Institutional Review Boards (IRB) for ethical approval of research studies.
  • Coordinate development of evidence-based, methodologically-sound clinical training materials and standards, supervisory systems, and other materials needed for program implementation
  • Support uptake of new MNH approaches in Jhpiego country programs with strategic program guidance and materials development
  • As appropriate, provide technical input to country programs during the development of workplans and/or long-term strategies
  • Engage in the business development/proposal process by contributing to the writing and review of new proposals for the MNH unit

Required Qualifications:
  • MPH or other relevant Master’s degree, or equivalent experience
  • Superior skills in technical writing and editing
  • 5+ years' technical experience supporting, implementing, and/or managing international field-based MNH programs
  • Awareness of, sensitivity to, and experience in working in multiple socio-economic settings and with multi-cultural staff and groups
  • Ability to develop productive working relationships with counterparts in other agencies and organizations worldwide
  • Proven ability to multi-task
  • Excellent skills in facilitation, teamwork, and coordination

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Clinical background and experience
  • Lived and worked in one or more low- or middle-income countries
  • Fluency in French, Portuguese, Arabic, and/or Spanish
  • Familiarity with human subjects research and health services research
