GENERAL FUNCTION
Work involves performing all types of mechanical repair work on trucks and heavy-duty construction equipment, as well as, specialized gasoline and diesel powered equipment, including complex engine repairs, complete overhauls, transmission, brake and differential repairs. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and accepted trade practices with a careful regard for safe work practices, and most assignments performed under general supervision.

No supervisory responsibilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES
A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Perform diagnostic (trouble shooting) analysis of malfunctioning or inoperable equipment (i.e., vehicles, machinery, small engine equipment, equipment attachments, etc.) to determine necessary repair and service work needed.
2. Perform any required mechanic service (including but not limited to complete overhauls), repairs and maintenance on department construction and maintenance equipment, including but not limited to mechanic work on such items as specialized gasoline and diesel powered equipment, including complex engine repairs, complete overhauls, transmission, electrical systems, brake and differential repairs and other mechanical components on a variety of heavy equipment.
3. As received, respond to service calls on broken-down equipment. Haul equipment for use and service work.
4. Winterize all department vehicles and equipment. Mount/remove sand salt spreaders, mount/remove plows, wings and underbodies, change plow, wing and grader blades, sharpen blades for mowers. Mount/remove brush cutters.
5. Service, maintain, and repair small engine equipment, as needed, including mowers, chainsaws, generators, pumps, weed eaters, etc.
6. Maintain tires on trucks, trailers, graders, etc. (mount, dismount, repair, etc.)
7. Responsible to know and practice the Safety policies of the County. Perform all job tasks in a safe and prescribed manner.

B. OTHER JOB DUTIES
1. Maintain and clean the shop area, daily, for it to remain a safe working environment.
2. May be assigned to plow snow on a relief patrol winter section, as available.
3. Any other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or the equivalent is required. Two years of education in diesel and heavy equipment plus two (2) years paid mechanic experience repairing diesel engines and heavy-duty trucks and/or equipment required; or four (4) years of paid mechanic experience repairing diesel engines and heavy duty trucks and/or equipment. Education and/or paid experience must include minimum of one (1) year maintaining/repairing electronic engine and machine controls.

Possession of, and maintained while employed with Wood County Highway Department, a valid Wisconsin Commercial Drivers License (CDL), Class A with the ā€œNā€ endorsement with zero restrictions required, or ability to acquire within 60 days. Possession of a safe driving record and the ability to maintain one while employed by Wood County.

Reading, writing, adding, and subtracting is needed to read and interpret various repair and service manuals. Basic, everyday living skills are needed, as is the ability to understand and follow oral and written directions (work assignments).

Ability to perform computer diagnostics.

Emergency conditions may warrant being called in to work on off-scheduled hours.

Must furnish small tools up to 1-1/4ā€ to perform all light and heavy-duty equipment work.

Basic equipment used: wrenches, screwdrivers, power tools, lifts.
