Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Mechanic Specialist performs general operating and maintenance duties required to keep water treatment plant, carpenter shop, electrical shop, refrigeration shop, outside clinics or control panel operational and functioning properly. This position is responsible for testing, recording and logging information repairing and maintaining of related equipment and performing routine work.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County. Models Eskenazi values of Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development and Excellence
  • Performs general operating and maintenance duties required to keep water treatment plant, carpenter shop, electrical shop, refrigeration shop, outside clinics or control panel operational and functioning properly
  • Responsible for testing, recording and logging information repairing and maintaining of related equipment and performing routine work.
  • Follows oral and written instructions
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills
  • Performs routine surveillance of assigned areas
  • Performs related mechanical and electrical work
  • Maintains records of inspections and work performed
  • Performs housekeeping duties

Job Requirements

  • Completion of high school or equivalent (GED), plus vocational training of commercial/industrial plumbing or 3 years of progressive work experience may be acceptable in lieu of educational requirements
  • Specific training in the areas of water treatment/chemical safety/hazards is helpful
  • On the job training provided for each specific skill area
  • Valid Indiana Driver's License required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills essential
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and related trades
  • Previous boiler house experience in medium-large steam producing plant
  • Knowledge of related codes and standards
  • Through knowledge of safe work practices as it relates to OSHA
  • Knowledge of chemicals typical to commercial/industrial systems
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic symbols, blue prints, drawing/service information
  • Ability to: interpret/apply hospital departmental policies and procedures
  • Ability to effectively work under limited supervision and establish daily work priorities and patterns
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the hospital, organizational and external agencies
  • Ability to use age appropriate communication skills
  • Age appropriate cognitive abilities, skills, techniques and communications are detailed in the department/area/unit job specific/age specific/age competencies
  • Vision perception is required
