The Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) is one component of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) which is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind, deafblind, multi-disabled and their families.
AIB is the state’s largest employer of persons who are blind or have significant disabilities. AIB has a manufacturing facility in Talladega, AL and Birmingham, AL. AIB also operates five Base Supply Centers in two states which are located on Redstone Arsenal, Fort Rucker, Anniston Army Depot, Robins AFB and Moody AFB.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Mechanic role will be responsible for maintenance of industrial type equipment to include sewing equipment, machine shop equipment, and material-handling equipment related to the manufacturing operations for our Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) division.
ABOUT YOU
You will play a vital role in performing various maintenance type responsibilities, as you will be a part of the AIB team in producing high quality work. Each employee should deal pleasantly and courteously with all of the AIB team to include coworkers, supervisors, Plant Manager and the Executive Manager by telephone, written correspondence and in person by using good interpersonal and communication skills. You will be required to perform your responsibilities that sets a good example for other employees to follow. You must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and deal with changes in work assignments. You must demonstrate a good attendance record and be able to meet demanding schedules and/or deadlines. The work schedule may require overtime. This position reports to Supervisor, Maintenance & Janitorial Department.
- High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate
- Must provide proof of a good driving record and be able to maintain the license during employment.
- Must possess a valid Alabama Driver’s License and maintain according to state regulations.
- Must be able to be insured by AIDB insurance carrier for the AIDB fleet vehicles.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Must follow AIDB policies and procedures.
- May be required to attend conference, in-service training and other functions.
- Must possess computer skills in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and a Google Account.
- Will be required to travel to any off-site production manufacturing facilities to perform maintenance type duties.
- Must have general knowledge of maintenance equipment, both manual and powered.
- Must have general knowledge of machine shop equipment including lathes, power saws, welders, drills, and other related equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance and participate in cost reduction efforts.
- Must be able to train on how to install attachments on machines.
- Must be able to train on repair and maintain equipment including related to all manufacturing operations.
- Must be willing to learn how to program automatic sewing machines.
- May be required to perform building maintenance duties.
- Operate machine tools, such as lathes and drill presses, to learn how to make new parts, attachments, jigs, fixtures, and work aids.
- Must follow all safety requirements.
- Must be physically capable of lifting up to 60 pounds on a regular basis.
- Must have the ability to train on the following types of equipment within the first 12 months of employment:
Needle positioner, thread trimmers, electronic and pneumatic devices and equipment.
Provide repair and maintenance of programmable equipment and robotics.
Provide repair of material handling, forklifts and routine manufacturing equipment.
- Must possess or develop an understanding of cultures and needs of persons who are deaf, blind or deaf/blind, ensuring all actions and decisions demonstrate a respect for and value of persons with sensory loss.
- Must attend Disability Sensitivity Training Class within the first six (6) months of employment.
SALARY: $14.66 - $17.20 Scale C5 Rank 31
This is an exempt position and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Payroll Schedule – Semi-monthly, Direct Deposit is required.
