Overview

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue provides fire protection and emergency medical services to approximately 542,524 residents in one of the fastest growing regions in Oregon. Our 390-square-mile service area includes the cities of Beaverton, Durham, King City, Newberg, North Plains, Rivergrove, Sherwood, Tigard, Tualatin, West Linn, and Wilsonville, and unincorporated portions of Clackamas, Multnomah, Washington, and Yamhill counties. Our district has 28 fire stations staffed by more than 442 career firefighters, a volunteer fire station, a Command and Business Operations Center, a training facility, a South Operating Center, and a Logistics Service Center. Residents served by TVF&R benefit from the sophistication, economies of scale, and resources of a large fire district with the accessibility and community involvement of a small-town fire department.

The Medical Billing Specialist performs essential duties within the medical billing program in compliance with District, state, and federal guidelines, to support cost recovery.

Example of Duties

GATHERS DATA: Reconciles and reviews patient care reports (PCR) for clarity of patient demographics, billing information and supportive documentation. May follow-up with District staff, patient, patient representative or hospital to obtain information and/or required documentation for processing claim accurately.

PAYOR IDENTIFICATION: Identifies and confirms applicable insurance coverage. Determines payor responsibility based on current Federal, State and industry regulations and incident circumstances.

CLAIM PREPARATION: Evaluates PCR narrative and flow chart to determine medical necessity, reasonability of transport, and level of service provided. Discerns, summarizes, and records chief complaints and symptoms utilizing standard ambulance billing codes.

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Interacts with and provides assistance to patients, patient representatives and insurance providers in follow-up procedures, including, but not limited to, general inquiries and past-due balances. Prepares and distributes physical and electronic invoices and claim forms. Collects credit card payments via phone. Provides information on payment assistance program and determines appropriate payment option utilizing District collections guidelines.

FIREMED ADMINISTRATION: Monitors membership-tracking spreadsheets. Coordinates, with assistance from Public Affairs, and participates in annual membership campaign. Answers inquiries from participants. Receives and processes applications and membership fees.

Qualifications


EDUCATION
High School graduate. Associate degree or supplemental coursework preferred.

EXPERIENCE
One year of experience in medical billing or EMS patient care, preferably in a medical transport agency.

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSURES
Certification in medical billing and/or coding (e.g., Certified Ambulance Coder) preferred.

POSITION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Ability to maintain awareness of the sensitive nature surrounding circumstances and communicates in an approachable, professional, and empathetic manner.

Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office suite programs (Word, Excel and Outlook) preferred.

Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, medical billing, and coding practices. Understanding of insurance hierarchy preferred.

COMPENSATION
The monthly salary range within a step system for this position is $4,071 - $5,509 per month. The starting pay assignment, based on a candidate's bona fide factor analysis in accordance with the District's pay equity system and the Oregon Equal Pay Act and will be in the range of $4,071- $4,883 per month. The maximum of $5,509 can be attained after five years contingent on performance.

The location for this position is the Command Business Operations Center, located in Tigard, OR. Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue strives to provide exceptional internal and external customer service.
