Medical Director - Crisis Services
Job description
Under the general supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, the Medical Director serves in accordance with the Michigan Mental Health Code, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN) policies and administrative rules. The Medical Director for the Crisis Program is responsible for the oversight and provisions of all services at the Crisis Care Center. In addition to the part-time administrative responsibilities, the psychiatrist will be expected to have a combination of responsibilities that include supervision of the mobile crisis team, education for students, residents or fellows as applicable and providing direct clinical services.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervises all clinical activities for the 24/7 Crisis Program.
- Provides clinical leadership and supervision of all medical/clinical aspects of service delivery.
- Ensures psychiatric assessments and follow-ups are completed.
- Provides direct psychiatric services.
- Ensures that all individuals receive appropriate evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, nursing, medical screening and medical/psychiatric evaluation, whenever indicated.
- Communicates complaints and incidents to supervisory personnel as needed.
- Ensures that risk assessments, education, progress towards treatment goals, including medical, psychological, social behavioral (biopsychosocial input) and developmental aspects of the individual’s situation are documented by medical providers.
- Consults with primary healthcare providers on the clinical aspects of the individuals being served and the implications for those individual’s physical healthcare needs.
- Initiates and/or ensures appropriate responses to all medical emergencies.
- Completes clinical documentation as required.
- Participates in multidisciplinary team processes to ensure quality outcomes and standards of care.
- Understands and adheres to DWIHN compliance standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policies.
- Models empathetic, person-centered leadership and teamwork style.
- Reviews policies, procedures and protocols for the delivery of psychiatric and medical services, including technical assistance and psychiatric input where needed.
- Keeps abreast of all federal and state regulations and laws and all DWIHN policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
- Collaborates with Advanced Practice Professionals as applicable.
- Supervises mobile crisis teams and is available for consultation to them.
- Works and teaches students, residents or fellows as applicable.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

- Knowledge and experience with the Accreditation and Certification Standards Joint Commission.

- Knowledge of medical and behavioral health practices and terminology.
- Knowledge of compliance standards.
- Knowledge of Medical Necessity Criteria for Behavioral Health Services.
- Knowledge of documents / regulations that govern the provision of mental health services, e.g., Medicaid Manual Mental Health and Substance Abuse Chapter III, State Plan for Medicaid, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Quality Plan, BBA requirements and the Mental Health Code.
- Knowledge of the practices and principles of psychological, emotional, and sociological assessment and diagnosis.
- Knowledge of diagnostics, psychopharmacology, and supportive treatment approaches as applied to a severely mentally ill (SMI) adult population.
- Knowledge of the identification and treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
- Knowledge of psychotropic medications.
- Knowledge of Community Mental Health Services Programs (CMHSP) and Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans (PIHP).

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
- Doctorate of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine from an accredited university.
AND
- Completion of a psychiatric residency at an accredited program.
AND
- Board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Additional Board Certification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and/or Addiction Psychiatry is preferred.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
- Three (3) years of full-time paid professional experience working in a human service, social service, mental health or behavioral health setting.
AND
- One (1) year of full-time paid professional experience as an executive, administrator, manager or supervisor in a human service, social service, mental health or behavioral health setting.
REQUIRED LICENSE(S).
- A valid and current Michigan License to practice as a physician.
- A valid and current Michigan controlled substance license.
- Valid and current Drug Enforcement Agency Registration.
- A valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with a safe and acceptable driving record.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is usually performed in an office setting but requires the employee to drive to different sites throughout Wayne County and the State of Michigan. This position can work remotely with supervisory approval. Currently this position is primarily a remote position however will transition to an in-person position as the facility progresses.
