Job Description


Job Summary

Performs a variety of clinical diagnostic tests in all areas of the laboratory using the principles and theories of their individual training. These clinical laboratory tests aid and assist the physician in diagnosis and treatment.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Observe professional ethics in maintaining confidential information acquired concerning the personal, financial, medical, or employment status of DMH patients and their families.
  • Accurately perform laboratory testing that will provide essential information in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Collect blood specimens for laboratory analysis using appropriate phlebotomy techniques.
  • Follow accepted safety practices for patients and hospital. Comply with OSHA and regulatory requirements in order to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Must report safety hazards to supervisor or designated person.
  • Must work effectively as a team member within the department and with other units to provide quality service through communication, cooperation and collaboration.
  • Maintain flexibility required to adapt to laboratory needs as related to testing and scheduling.
  • Perform other job duties as directed or assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology required

Preferred Skills

General laboratory experience and phlebotomy skills preferred

Physical Requirements: This position may require physical activities such as balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, grasping, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, and use of fingers and repetitive movements. An individual in this position may be required to carry or lift weight of up to 50 lbs. and push/pull 100-150 lbs. The sensory and communicative activities required for this position include feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling, and speaking. Individuals in this position could possibly be exposed to inside/outside environmental conditions, blood borne pathogens and body fluids, chemical hazards, respiratory hazards and radiological hazards.

Safety: Incumbent must be attentive at all times to their own personal safety, as well as the safety of patients, their families, visitors and employees of Drew Memorial Hospital. Hazardous and/or potentially hazardous conditions are to be immediately reported to a member of management. In accordance with Act 593, this position is considered a “Safety Sensitive Position,” as it requires the incumbent to work with confidential information or documents that may pertain to criminal investigations. Performing life-threatening procedures, working with confidential information or documents pertaining to criminal investigations, or Working with hazardous or flammable materials, controlled substances, food, or medicine.
