Job description
The Tulare County Health & Human Services Agency is currently recruiting for Mental Health Hearing Officers. This recruitment will be used to develop a list of Mental Health Hearing Officers to serve at the discretion of the Hearing Officer Selection Panel to fill immediate and future vacancies based on business need. Mental Health Hearing Officers are independent contractors and perform judicial officer duties under the authority and direction of the Tulare County Superior Court presiding judge or designee. This position is responsible for conducting Certification and Capacity Hearings for individuals involuntarily committed to a mental health facility pursuant to Welfare & Institutions Code 5150. Candidates shall be selected in accordance with statutory authority and regulations in Welfare & Institutions Code sections 5256.1 & 5334 (c). Applicants are advised that they may not practice law if they are selected.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct hearings regarding involuntary hospitalization for mental health patients (Probable Cause/Certification Review Hearings, Welfare & Institutions Code Sec 5250 et seq) & patients’ capacity to make treatment decisions (Capacity Hearings, Welfare & Institutions Code 5334 et seq). Hearings shall be conducted at designated health facilities.
Required Qualifications
- Membership in good standing with the State Bar of California
- Qualified applicants selected to provide professional services as Mental Health Hearing Officers must comply with all provisions of the CA Code of Judicial Ethics & CA Judicial Conduct Handbook.
