- POSITION SUMMARY
- The Mental Health Technician works under the direction of the Registered Charge Nurse, and shares responsibility for providing and maintaining a therapeutic milieu through supervised therapeutic activities, in accordance with relevant standards and regulations, as well as with clinical and administrative policies. The Mental Health Technician facilitates and provides direct care for patients of all ages; supports the therapeutic milieu; ensures the safety and well-being of patients.
- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supports and reinforces the therapeutic milieu in a manner consistent with the efforts of other treatment team members. Provides supportive care to patients, such as participating in conversation, recreational activities, and basic living activities. Sets limits, confronts counterproductive activities and behavior, and reassures and orients patients. Encourages and facilitates appropriate interactions between patients.
- Maintains a safe patient care environment, including performing safety checks and assisting in managing the therapeutic milieu.
- Coordinates and implements various aspects of milieu environment to provide a therapeutic experience for patients. Collaborates with other staff members to determine whether a patient represents a risk to himself/herself and/or others. Works with other unit personnel with crisis intervention techniques.
- Assists in the admission and orientation of new patients to the unit.
- Provides supportive care to patients, such as participating in conversation, recreational activities, and basic living activities.
- Records all appropriate information on patient charts; prepares regular reports describing each patient's mental status and functioning, as well as significant interactions. Reports and documents overt, covert, verbal, and non-verbal communications by patients.
- Monitors and assists with providing care for patients in seclusion or restraints in accordance with hospital policy.
- Monitors patients requiring Close Observation per hospital policy.
- Facilitates/leads community meetings, activity groups and other groups.
- Informs the Charge Nurse of patient conditions, physical and behavioral, appropriate to the degree of urgency warranted by the patient s condition.
- Provides education to patients (and/or families) that includes instruction in specific knowledge and/or skills needed to meet ongoing healthcare needs, and documents the same in the medical record.
- REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Possesses the ability to assess data reflective of a patient s status and interprets appropriate information needed to identify each patient s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and provides care as described in clinical services policies and procedures.
- Utilizes strict protocols when dealing with potentially aggressive patients and assures the protection of patient s rights.
- Adheres to appropriate professional boundaries in relation to patients.
- Sets limits, confronts counterproductive activities and behavior, and reassures and orients patients. Encourages and facilitates appropriate interactions between patients.
- EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE
- Education: Associate's Degree, Certification in Behavioral Sciences program or its equivalent coursework required.
- Experience: At least 6 months experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
