Job Summary:
Reporting to the Manager of Military Billing, Compliance, and Outreach, the Military Benefits Advisor is a critical, process-driven position that provides timely and accurate VA and military certification. Additionally, this role works to provide comprehensive resources to veterans, their dependents, and active duty military in matters related to use of VA education benefits, Tuition Assistance, and other military-related education benefits.

Job Description:
RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
School Certifying Official
  • Provide excellent customer service to veterans and active duty through consistent and effective outreach via multiple channels in an effort to encourage communication, retention, and degree completion.
  • The School Certifying Official (SCO) supplies VA application instructions and informs students of documentation needed for file.
  • Prior to enrollment certification, perform a cross check of student billing information with tuition amount to be certified to ensure tuition/fee certification complies with VA regulations.
  • Certify enrollment through VAONCE/Enrollment Manager. Keep VA informed of veteran enrollment status as well as other eligible persons receiving benefits.
  • Certify enrollment in accordance with Point Loma Nazarene University’s Yellow Ribbon agreement.
  • Work with Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for appropriate authorization documentation.
  • Report enrollment changes within 30 days per VA guidelines.
  • Process check request and mail back funds if an enrollment change results in overpayment from VA.
  • Work in collaboration with Financial Aid and One Stop financial regarding impact on student accounts due to enrollment changes.
  • Report student dismissals, graduation dates, and academic probation.
  • Assist students who are experiencing issues regarding payment or problems regarding entitlement.
  • Keep students informed of remaining entitlement.
  • Remain current on matters pertaining to VA rules, benefits, and additions to SCO handbook.
VA and Federal Compliance
  • VA file management to meet compliance requirements.
  • Assist with annual VA compliance audit.
  • Assist with annual DOD compliance updates and 5-year audit.
  • Assist with annual VA Application for Accredited Institutions.
Military Benefits Advising
  • Represents and advocates on behalf of military-connected students throughout the university community.
  • Serve as an advisor to student organizations as appropriate, focusing on a sense of belonging.
  • Counsel military-connected students on their VA benefits, responsibilities, and other matters related to their enrollment at PLNU.
  • Meet regularly with current PLNU military-connected students to assist with benefits, and administrative needs as they pertain to financial aid, student accounts, and academic credits. In addition, assist students by troubleshooting any issues that arise.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to all visitors to the Commuter and Veteran Commons.
  • Participate on retention teams and other campus committees and task forces related to military-connected students as needed.

  • Proficient in VA Once, Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other common software packages; Google Apps for Education, PowerFAIDS, Workday, and SalesForce knowledge preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sitting for periods greater than one hour. Use of computer equipment: computer keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Vision to read documents, e-mail and other correspondence, and reports on paper and computer monitor. Hearing and speaking to communicate effectively with others in person and by phone. Will also stand, stoop, push, pull, and lift up to 10 lbs throughout the day.
