JOB INFORMATION

Non-exempt; part-time; working up to 20 hours per week; assigned hours may include weekdays, weekends; between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with occasional evening hours; no benefits

Museum Interpreters conduct tours of Rose Hill Manor Park and Children's Museum for scheduled reservation tour groups (especially elementary school groups) and park patrons. This position will lead museum programs (both on and off-site) for a variety of age groups, including Scout programs and birthday parties. Providing assistance during special events and community outreach is a primary function of this position. Museum Interpreters are expected to learn interpretive and demonstration techniques of historical skills that will be put into practice for conducting programs, classes, special events and tours. Supervision is received from the Museum Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead informational tours of the Children's Museum, Carriage Museum and Farm Museum and park grounds
  • Provide historical information to visiting tourists and park patrons
  • Prepare for and lead museum programs such as Wee Historians, Museum Academy, Homeschool Days, etc. as assigned

  • Provide programming for and oversight to children's birthday parties at Rose Hill
  • Inform Museum Manager of program supply needs, exhibit and display needs and repair/replacements, etc
  • Make recommendations regarding exhibit interpretation, tour and museum modifications, etc.
  • Prepare and set-up interpretative stations for tours and special events
  • Assure daily sanitation/clean-up of museum exhibit interactives and play areas
  • Assure security of the park buildings
  • Maintain records for programs supervised
  • Perform other related duties as assigned/required

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • High school graduation or the equivalent

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public, with particular sensitivity to the needs and interests of children
  • Interest in history and willingness to expand knowledge
  • Strong and effective (English) public speaking skills
  • Accurate math and clerical skills
  • Physical requirements include the ability to climb stairs, carry supplies and travel throughout indoor and outdoor park/museum areas while conducting tours and programs

PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:
  • Additional related education
  • Experience working with pre-school and elementary school-aged children
  • Experience leading programs
  • Previous tour guide/docent experience

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / EXAMINATION PROCESS

  • Available for weekday, weekend and holiday hours based on facility use and reservations
  • Museum Interpreters receive initial training and job shadowing. All interpreters will receive additional training at a minimum of once per year in either in person or self guided formats
  • Hours vary per week and depend on programming and the season. Depending on roles assigned hours in Dec-Feb are limited
