Since 1879, Fort Collins has been the home of the state’s land grant institution, Colorado State University, which currently enrolls 34,000 students. SUMMARY
The Natural Areas Trails/Visitor Amenities Maintenance Worker is a seasonal (3 month) position with the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Dept. The employee performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in natural areas maintenance. These activities can include: trail and fence construction, repair, and maintenance; trash and litter removal; vault toilet cleaning; installation of signs; construction and repairs of public improvements; planting and seeding; weed control; installation and repair of irrigation systems; and other maintenance activities on natural area sites of varying size and composition.
This is an hourly position that does not provide sick leave, insurance or retirement benefits. The employee is paid for standard City holidays.If the employee is required to work on a holiday, the employee is given another day off as a substitute; day to be determined by the employee’s supervisor. The employee is expected to work 40 hours/week and is paid time and a half for hours worked beyond 40 each week.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED Receives supervision from the Natural Areas Supervisor with field guidance from a Natural Areas Technicians.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED May oversee volunteer groups of varying sizes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive:
  • Constructs and maintains soft trails;
  • Removes trash and litter from natural area sites;
  • Cleans vault toilets;
  • Constructs and repairs kiosks, sign frames, fences, boardwalks, irrigation systems, and other structures; Installs signs, benches, and other structures;
  • Plants, waters, and provides other aftercare of native plants;
  • Controls noxious and other exotic weedy plants through mowing, cutting, spraying herbicides, and other techniques;
  • Operates, maintains, and performs minor repairs on equipment and vehicles such as mowers, trucks, sprayers, etc;
  • Educates the public through field contacts and other communications.
EQUIPMENT USED
Various motor vehicles such as pickup trucks, small dump trucks, trailers, etc. Also operates specialized equipment such as mowers, rollers, weed whips, etc. May require use of various power and manual tools as needed to perform all aspects of the job such as saws, drills, wrenches, etc. Job will require the occasional use of standard office equipment, including computers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to use basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to operate a variety of automotive and power equipment used for natural areas maintenance.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, outside professionals, and the general public.
  • Ability to work a variety of weekday, weekend, and holiday hours.
  • Ability to work additional hours required for special events and emergency situations.
  • Ability to successfully complete additional training.
  • Ability to guide volunteer groups.
  • Ability to use computers and other standard office equipment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School or general education degree (GED); college-level course work in natural resources or related field preferred. College course work and volunteer experience may substitute for work experience. Must be at least 18 years of age.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or fellow employees.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Current Driver's License.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to sit, reach with hands and arms, carry, talk, hear, and traverse uneven surfaces and terrain. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, twist, push, and pull. The employee must have manual dexterity to operate tools and motor and manual vehicles. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions, sometimes severe in nature. The employee will be expected to work on natural areas sites inhabited by rattlesnakes and sites containing prairie dogs that may be infected with plague. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee will, on occasion, be required to work in high, exposed locations.
