JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

I Job Overview:

Job Title: Natural Resources Technician

Department: Facilities and Natural Resources

Classification: Non-exempt, Hourly

Job Type: Full-time Monday-Friday, occasional evenings and weekends

Job Status: Employee,40 hours/week

Reports to: Natural Resources Manager

Supervisory Role: No

Travel: No – local/Ohio

II Job Summary:

The Natural Resources Technician is responsible for assisting the Natural Resources Manager in the stewardship of the Nature Center property and serving as a liaison with the public via educational programming, outreach events and volunteer experiences.

III Job Responsibilities & Duties:

A. Natural Resources Management (70%):

· Assist in the implementation of the Nature Center’s Natural Resources Management Plan, which outlines stewardship of our habitats including riparian flood plain, marsh, upland forest, and a demonstration prairie.

· Control invasive plants using herbicide and manual techniques; reintroduction/installation of native plant species; and stewardship of our natural areas, trails, boardwalks, deer exclosures, signage and demonstration features such as pollinator, rain, and native plant gardens.

· Assist in the use of GIS for mapping, measuring and planning.

· Manage the Sustainability Hub building as well as the maintenance of tools and equipment which are stored there. Training will be provided on the use of basic hand and power tools and management techniques.

B. Volunteer and Intern Leadership (20%):

· Provide oversight and leadership while working closely with volunteers and/or seasonal interns.

· Lead groups or individuals on work projects, under the direction of the Natural Resources Manager.

· Be a resource for plant identification and best practices in field techniques.

C. Events and Public Programs (8%):

· Lead or assist with environmental and sustainability programming with topics such as rain barrels, composting, native landscaping and gardening.

· Assist with Nature Center special events as needed.

D. Other (2%):

● Inter-departmental assistance.

● Other duties as assigned.

IV Required Qualifications & Skills:

● A strong interest in the natural world.

● Enrolled (or completed) in a degree program in Biology, Ecology or Environmental Science or related field experience.

● Basic PC and Microsoft Office comprehension.

● This is an on-site job position with very little opportunity to work remotely.

V Working Conditions:

● The Technician will work outdoors in various weather conditions. This includes heat, cold, snow, ice, sleet & rain.

● Some indoor office work, at a desk, is required.

● Position requires lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing, kneeling, sitting, bending, strenuous physical activity, digging, cutting and hand and power tool use.

● Examples: Installation of potted native trees and shrubs, removal of invasive species via mechanical and chemical means.

VI Compensation: $13.00 Hourly, Includes full benefits package.
