Job description
The Network Engineer is a full-time, 12-month position located on the OCH Campus in Monroe, NC, and involves travel between all SPCC locations. Under the direction of the Associate Vice President of Information Technology Services/CIO, the Network Engineer supports and maintains network systems in the organization by providing installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and resolution of hardware, software, and communications issues as well as develops new system designs. In addition, this position maintains data centers and data wire closets across all locations.
Essential Duties Summary
Position Expectations:
- Ensures the management of security for the physical networks for the College
- Leads in creating and implementing short and long term network plans for the College
- Assists in managing and continually updating Information technology policies and procedures for the College
- Develops and manages the networking, VOIP, and computer hardware standards for the College
- Assists in the design of multi-server environments including IP address schemes, DNS, DHCP, etc.
- Configures and installs client and server network software for upgrading and maintaining network and telecommunication systems
- Maintains multi-site network operations, data centers, and network closets
- Supervises the administration of systems and servers related to network to ensure availability of services to authorized users
- Troubleshoots malfunctions of network hardware and software applications, telephones, and security systems to resolve operational issues and restore services
- Works with faculty, staff, and administration to maximize use of networking and computer services
Essential Job Duties
- Supports data and voice network systems at all locations within the College including communications equipment, cabling, and related infrastructure
- Assembles LAN/WAN equipment on computer systems according to established design specifications
- Monitors network systems to ensure they are available for college business in accordance with Service Level Agreements
- Troubleshoots and provides remedies to network problems for internal and remote users
- Recommends and installs upgrades and new applications and equipment
- Completes installation and swap-out of network hardware including routers, switches, and other communication gear
- Documents and maintains system configurations for disaster recovery
- Maintains data centers and data wiring closets using best practices and in a professional manner
- Will be required to work outside of Normal Business hours, primarily in the event of an emergency or implementation of new systems/upgrades which will need to be done after hours
- On-call support that may involve night or weekend coverage as assigned
- May perform other duties as required
Technical Skills:
- Working knowledge of Cisco routing, switching and VoIP
- Working knowledge of Cisco Call Manager, Unity Voicemail and Presence
- Working knowledge of Cisco ASA firewalls
- Working knowledge of structured cable systems including Category 5e/6 and Single-mode and Multi-mode fiber

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Three years of experience in networking and computer support
- Three years of experience with LAN and WAN technologies
- Three years of experience with designing and configuring wired and wireless networks supporting both open and secured access, and voice and video applications
- Experience maintaining network security through proper configuration of VPN and Firewalls
- Experience with TCP/IP, IP addressing, CIDR, Subnetting, VLSM, and Network Address Translation (NAT)
- Ability to design, set up and configure network switching and routing environments, for example trunking, VLAN, Inter VLAN routing, default routes, Policy Based Routing (PBR), STP, HSRP, VSS
- Knowledge of data center operations and best practices
- Ability to work independently and with teams
- A customer-oriented attitude and desire to help others succeed
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills
- A demonstrated positive and proactive approach in identifying problems, creating innovative solutions
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Technology or related field
- CCNP or CCNA certifications
- Experience with the following:
o Cisco and Meraki Switching
o 802.1x protocol support and configuration
o Cisco ASA, ISE, Web Security Appliance, and Firepower
o Call Manager and Cisco Unity
o Wireless Lan Controller
o Visio network diagramming
o Unified Computing System (UCS)
o VMWare and Storage Area Network
- Experience in an educational environment, preferably higher education
- Detail-oriented and ability to multi-task
- A demonstrated positive and proactive approach in identifying problems, creating innovative solutions, and managing projects.
