Job description

The UMKC Office of Information Services seeks a Network Engineer to support, configure, install, and maintain Voice over IP telecommunications systems including routers, switches, gateways, Cisco voice application services and IP phones. The applicant must have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and with a team, while communicating clearly with customers, project managers, IT staff, vendors and team members. This individual will be expected to perform under limited supervision, using independent judgement and established producers, policies and programming protocols to execute day-to-day duties and responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Devise, plan, deploy and improve voice networks from concept to implementation by collaborating with vendors, managers, and network engineers
  • Analyze trends and develop plans to minimize outages in a 24/7 environment
  • Troubleshoot and resolve voice network related problems
  • Provide advice, guidance, and support of VoIP systems to customers/end-users and other IT groups
  • Write manuals and document current network procedures

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify at the ENTRY level a candidate must possess a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired as necessary

To qualify at the SPECIALIST level, the ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and 2+ years of related work experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired as necessary

Preferred Qualifications

The best qualified candidates will demonstrate:

  • Knowledge and experience designing, documenting, and operating a large enterprise voice network and troubleshooting performance issues
  • Knowledge in other network standards including cabling, TCP/IP, DHCP, routing and switching
  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities
  • Ability to maintain ticketing queue: troubleshooting, phone, and voicemail setup
  • Experience configuring and administering VoIP servers, SIP, media gateways, T1s, PRIs, etc.
  • Experience building and supporting Cisco Unified Communication Applications, including:
    • Cisco Call Manager
    • Cisco Unity Connection
    • Cisco Contract Center Express & Finesse
    • Cisco Jabber/Webex
    • Cisco Voice Gateways
    • Verba voice recording

Preferred Education and Experience:

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree in a technical field or comparable experience and CCNA, CCNP Voice or related certifications


Full Time/Part Time

This is a full-time (100% FTE), benefit-eligible, salaried (exempt) position.

Salary

Network Engineer (ENTRY) - $48,900 - $62,971 annual commensurate with education, experience and internal equity

Network Engineer (SPECIALIST) - up to $70,000 annual commensurate with education, experience and internal equity
