Job description

Larson Newspapers is seeking a full-time reporter in Cottonwood and Camp Verde near Sedona, in the Verde Valley that is located between Phoenix and Flagstaff. Larson Newspapers is a family owned newspaper group founded and based in Sedona, Arizona. Publishing since October 1963, Larson Newspapers has the largest readership of any print publication in Sedona and the Verde Valley, serving 20,000 readers weekly.

Our staff regularly earns individual awards from the Arizona Newspapers Association and we usually win the 1st, 2nd or 3rd place prize for General Excellence.

Responsibilities

• Write and report eight stories a week, approximately four from Camp Verde, Rimrock, Lake Montezuma and/or Beaver Creek and four from Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Jerome, Page Springs and Cornville. Hard news, feature stories, lifestyles, profiles, arts and other general assignment and breaking news coverage across Sedona and the Verde Valley.

• Write one additional story for The Village View (monthly) and four or five special tabs throughout the year.
• Research local, community and regional news.
• Ensure late-breaking news is added to website, when needed.

• Post stories to social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube). We have a very active social media presence in our communities.

Skills and Requirements

• A journalism degree or experience working at a newspaper is necessary.
• Knowledge of Associated Press Style required.
• We have two full-time photojournalists, but basic photography skills are a plus.
• Social media skills preferred.
• Critical thinking, reading and analysis.
• Interview skills in person and over the phone, as needed.
• Understanding of the news process.
• Available to work on a flexible schedule.

• Ability to work under stressful conditions and strict deadlines.

Reporters can choose to live anywhere in the Verde Valley (Sedona, Camp Verde, Clarkdale, Cottonwood or Jerome, or the unincorporated areas of Page Springs, Cornville, Rimrock, Lake Montezuma, the Village of Oak Creek or Oak Creek Canyon).
