Night and Weekend Advocate

20 – 30 per week, varies

Job Description Responsibilities:
1. Maintain client and shelter security/confidentiality during shift coverage.
a. Document all client/ shelter related incidents in shift change book and/or client file.
b. Explain, again if needed, and enforce all rules when needed.
c. Protect confidentiality of client information. NO DISCUSSION OF OTHER CLIENTS OR THEIR CASE TO ANOTHER CLIENT. NO DISCUSSION OF STAFF.
d. Maintain medicines in locked box/file and distribute to clients as needed.
e. Maintain child-safety measures by policing for poisons, sharp items, etc. within reach of children and cover uncovered electrical outlets.
f. Monitor facility doors and windows making sure all are kept locked.
g. Monitor client telephone calls being placed or received on crisis/hall line.
2. Answer and evaluate crisis calls. Options: allow victim to enter shelter; refer community resource number; refer to another shelter, if full, and call shelter on victim’s behalf; place in non-residential program – outreach; safety plan with victim; offer emotional support and assistance.
3. Record donation received, what and from whom, and write thank you note.
4. Enforce cleanliness of shelter, inform Shelter Manager of necessary repairs and needed supplies.
5. Enforce client satisfactory completion of chores.
6. Make recommendations on procedural matters affecting overall shelter operation.
7. Ensure client bedroom is prepared and ready for new victim.
8. Implement energy saving techniques: lights/TV off, dryer not cycling, heat/ac comfortable not excessive, etc.
9. Attend all staff meetings.
10. Acquire a sincere commitment to the success of the program.
11. Upon arrival, greet each client using name. Inquire of their well-being. Check to see of any current needs.
12. Saturday/Sunday – Check all clients room’s between 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. for neatly made beds, no food or drink, clothes off floor, no crayons or markers on floor or marks on wall and bed furniture and spreads, closet check, check for items pushed under bed, dresser tops need to be neat, organized and dust-free, floors vacuumed, if crib being used as storage items need to be folder and organized, electronics need to be off when not in use, blinds not bent back and dusted, and any other items that need attention.
13. 11:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. shift – Advocates can “rest” during shift. No sleeping.
14. The shelter exists for the SOLE purpose of women who have been physically, verbally, emotionally, sexually and/or financially abused. You are here only to answer crisis calls and to meet the needs of the women in the shelter and their children. Personal calls, the ringing/music from your cell phone, personal computer use, reading, texting may occur in limited amounts only AFTER the needs of each and every women and child is met, after ‘meaningful contact’ occurs and after responsibilities
15. All employees incur bad days; personal situations are left at front door.
16. All clients are to be spoken to respectfully and with concern; NO FAVORITISM.
17. Difficult clients need to be addressed with the Shelter Manager.
18. 30 minutes prior to end of shift, all ‘meaningful contact’ with clients is entered into CaseWorthy.
19. Parents are not allowed to administer corporal punishment. Reinforce other methods: time-out chair, loss of privileges, earlier bedtime, etc.
20. DO NOT report to work with fever, chills, nausea, etc. Find a replacement and inform the Shelter Manager/Program Director.
21. Perform other duties as assigned by the Shelter Manager/Program Director.

Pay: $10.00 per hour
