The Cole Eye Institute currently has more than 20 locations across the greater Cleveland and Akron areas with plans for future growth. The Institute includes more than 140 staff physicians and researchers who diagnose, treat, and investigate all conditions of the eye, including macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.

The Cole Eye Institute is looking to hire a full-time Non-Certified Ophthalmic Assistant to provide world class care to patients in a compassionate, attentive, and efficient out-patient setting. Our Non-Certified Ophthalmic Assistant is an integral part of the ophthalmic caregiver team and strives to provide the best ophthalmic care possible to patients. They work under the supervision of ophthalmologists to obtain and document detailed patient histories as well as to perform a series of preliminary tests to aid the physician in diagnosing and treating patients.

Primary Duties include:

  • Performing patient care, ophthalmic testing procedures and initial patient examinations in ophthalmic subspecialties as directed by physician or supervisor.

  • Has a minimum of 1 year experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Under direction of supervisor or physician receives and prepares patients for examination or treatment.
  • May perform routine screening tests.
  • Documents patient information in the patient medical record.
  • Performs stocking, maintenance and other duties as assigned, including maintaining exam rooms, equipment and supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • High School Diploma.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Certifications:

  • None required.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work unsupervised or with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Non Certified Work Experience:

  • Minimum of one year experience in an ophthalmic setting providing direct patient care.
  • Additional formal education or training in ophthalmology may substitute for some or all of the stated experience.

Certified Work Experience and Education Necessary:

Certifications:

  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience required.

Field Technician Work Experience:

  • Prior experience in a customer-facing role; prior experience in a healthcare setting in a patient-facing role preferred
  • Additional formal education or training in ophthalmology may substitute for some or all of the stated experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and PC.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.
  • May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting.
  • Visual acuity, including the ability to distinguish colors.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
