GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
This is professional work performed under the supervision of the Early Childhood Development and Health Service (ECDHS) Director.
Duties involve planning, implementing and coordinating aspects of a comprehensive nutrition program. This works involves collaboration with staff in other program content areas, and must include ongoing assessment of the quality of nutrition services provided. Important aspects of the work involves developing a nutrition work program in accordance with the Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations and agency objectives.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plan, develop and coordinate a nutrition program ensuring an integrated and comprehensive system of services for children, staff and families; along with various committees utilizing outside resources.
2. Establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with all public and private agencies or organizations that are involved in nutritional service; solicits in-kind and volunteer services.
3. Prepare application for participation in the USDA Child Nutrition Program.
4. Participate in a multidisciplinary team approach to provide health and nutrition services to children, families and staff; assuming close collaboration with the Early Head Start (EHS) Family and Health Coordinator.
5. Support Family Service/Case Workers in providing direction for the implementation of the food program.
6. Plan and cost out menus.
7. Make periodic visits to Head Start/Early Head Start centers to monitor the Nutrition Program.
8. Make available modified diets for enrollees with special needs; and participate in close collaboration with the Disability Coordinator and the EHS Coordinator in providing special feeding equipment and supplies.
9. Provide for a record keeping system of the food program as required by HSPPS and USDA guidelines.
10. Prepare the USDA claim form monthly.
11. Coordinate the distribution of menus to centers and parents.
12. Assist in identifying staff and family nutrition training needs to be included in the ECDHS training plan; conduct and coordinate nutrition related training for Head Start/Early Head Start staff and parents.
13. Provide nutritional information to Head Start/Early Head Start parents including available food assistance programs.
14. Prepare requisition for nutrition supplies.
15. Review and approve all food purchase orders.
16. Rewrite or update the nutrition plan annually.
17. Assist in interviewing potential nutritional staff and participate in the recommendation process.
18. Provide input into the evaluation of the performance of the nutrition staff.
19. Attend advisory committee sessions.
20. Prepare and submit monthly reports to the Early Childhood and Health Services Director.
21. Attend sessions, workshops and conferences as needed/requested.
22. Plan and recommend policies and goals for the nutrition service area.
23. Assist in the orientation process and training of new staff as needed/requested.
24. Maintain records, statistical reports and participate in evaluation, studies and research; prepare periodic progress report of achievements to program goals and objectives and submit to the ECDHS Director.
25. Actively involve parents in the development of the nutrition program through training, developing menus, etc.
26. Provide support and technical assistance to Family Service/Case Workers in ensuring nutrition screenings are completed and their individual nutritional needs are met with appropriate nutritional plans and follow up to include but not limited to heights and weights and well-baby checks
27. Work in collaboration with the EHS Child Care Partnership (CCP) Liaison to foster an appropriate nutritional program for staff, children and families.
28. Ensure coordination of Disaster Preparedness through implementing an emergency plan to ensure children have access to meal service during times of emergency closures such as pandemics or other extended periods of closure.
29. Provide nutritional support to pregnant, breastfeeding, and post-partum women in close collaboration with the EHS Coordinator; as well as the EHS Family and Health Coordinator.
30. Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Considerable knowledge of nutritional needs of infant toddler and preschool aged children with skills in the development of special diets.
2. Considerable knowledge of the principles of nutrition and their application to conditions of growth and development of infant toddler and pre-school aged children.
3. Thorough knowledge of public and private health and social service agencies and the ability to maintain effective working relationships.
4. Knowledge of the techniques and procedures used for planning nutrition programs.
5. Ability to conduct sound program evaluations, analyze problems and make plans or recommendations based on findings.
6. Ability to coordinate work activities with associates, staff of other components, parents and parent groups and outside resources.
7. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, and prepare concise reports.
8. Ability to maintain accurate files and records in support of nutrition program progress.
9. Possess genuine concern for, and willingness to work with disadvantaged parents of children enrolled in program.
10. Knowledge of Agency philosophy, vision, mission, goals and objectives.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: B.S. degree in Nutrition with emphasis in Institutional Management and three years’ experience in managing a nutrition program. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Must meet minimal physical and medical standards; must have approved State and Federal childcare background clearance.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must have current state of Mississippi driver's license.
2, Must comply with current immunization and state health requirement.
3. Must be able to meet agency approved minimal physical and medical standards.
4. Must have access to an automobile for make home visits and participating in recruitment/community assessments.
