POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the guidance of the Healthy Living Manager, this is part of a mobile nutrition distribution and enrichment program with sites in Metro-Detroit. These mobile Ys will “pop up” in parks, apartment complexes and community organizations to bring the Y outside our walls and provide healthy meals and engaging activities, for both in person and at home use. The Food & Fun Team Member will work to develop engaging activities for drop-in style youth programming, assist in serving nutritious meals, and build meaningful relationships with families in the communities of service. In addition, Food & Fun Team Members will work with the Healthy Living Manager to track outcomes and maintain thorough records for the meal program. Ideal candidates for this role would be high-energy, creative thinkers with a passion for building new relationships and community networks. Flexibility, the ability to adapt to changing circumstances, adherence to all COVID safety protocols and previous experience in youth work is required.

The part-time Food & Fun Team Member position begins in early June for training/planning. Position hours increase to approximately 30 hours per week in mid-June. The mobile distribution program operates Monday through Friday, mid-June to August 27. Daily hours are to be determined but generally range from 10am – 6pm. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Food & Fun Team Member must have the competencies, skills, and proven leadership ability to successfully carry out the YMCA mission, goals, and visions for serving the community.

  • Supervises program participants at multiple drop-in sites each day.
  • Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Gathers resources, materials, supplies for activities as needed; aids in the set-up and clean-up of activities at each site, building a program culture of maintaining the community spaces that we conduct programming in.
  • Facilitates a program environment that invites exploration, promotes positive play, and welcomes children, families and staff; works with Healthy Living Manager to connect families with wraparound services in the community.
  • Serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior, and understands positive youth development as it relates to the academic and social development of youth; upholds the YMCA’s Core Values and models the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) standards.
  • Adheres to program standards and demonstrates knowledge of established safety procedures (including COVID-19 protocols), makes real-time decisions, and effectively communicates changes or decisions surrounding safety; completes and follows up with any pertinent incidences, following YMCA protocols.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings; connects and communicates effectively with the team to celebrate success, adapt programs to participant needs, and address concerns.
  • Collects and manages needed data for grant and learning purposes; maintains all necessary meal program paperwork in compliance with program regulations.
  • Communicates any needs pertaining to program vehicles; meets requirements for YMCA insurance and is able to drive a transit vehicle as needed (no special license required, approved drivers can have no more than 5 points on driving record and must be at least 21 years old).
  • Transports food and supplies in a YMCA branded transit van to sites, as needed. Maintains a clean and organized work space.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children, preferably in a group setting is required.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, nutrition education, wellness, education, youth development, etc.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
  • Complete Blood Borne Pathogens training, CPR/FA, Redwoods, and concussion trainings as required.
  • Up to date, current driver’s license to drive a YMCA vehicle.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.

  • Capability to be outside participating for the majority of the day.
