SEASON DATES: JANUARY 1, 2023 – JUNE 16, 2023


Cold River Camp has served as a seasonal Appalachian Mountain Club hiking camp since 1919. Cold River Camp is in the lovely and quiet Evans Notch area of the White Mountain National Forest, which remains noncommercial and offers an excellent range of outdoor recreational opportunities. The typical routine for the 9-week summer season's guests is to spend a full week at Camp in one of the 26 cabins. The cabins have various occupancy to accommodate individual parties or groups desiring cabins for one person or up to six. Breakfasts and dinners are served family style in the main lodge. Central washrooms provide hot and cold running water and electricity. Guests may go on hikes led by trained, volunteer hike leaders and naturalists, or they may plan their own outings. In the evenings, volunteers lead optional group activities such as a talent show, square dancing, sing-alongs, poetry night, ranger talks and slide shows are offered in the recreation hall. This seasonal position supports the advance work necessary to make summer a success and will be available from January to mid-June. The Off-Season Supervisor’s primary responsibility is to hire employees for the 2023 season. Additionally, the Supervisor oversees pre-season tasks and works with the Camp Committee on any reporting and planning needs. The camp committee estimates the tasks outlined in the job description will require approximately 78 hours of work, dispersed throughout the season.

Cold River Camp and its seasonal staff are supported by a dedicated volunteer committee that provides management and operational oversight. Fall and spring basic service guest offerings are managed by off-season managers.


What you'll be doing:

  • Recruit and hire as needed an Assistant Manager, experienced Chef, Assistant Cook, Prep Cook, and an eight-person Crew.
  • Ensure compliance with AMC’s Personnel Policies, payroll and employment procedures.
  • Work with the Committee to recruit volunteer leaders.
  • Work effectively with the Cold River Camp Committee and AMC staff.
  • Attend Cold River Camp Committee Meetings.
  • Prepare reports for Cold River Camp Committee and AMC as needed.
  • Make recommendations for improvements in Camp policies and procedures.
  • Assist Cold River Camp Committee Treasurer and bookkeeper in preparing the budgets and support the AMC annual audit process.
  • Maintain contact with the volunteer Facilities Manager.
  • Provide advice as needed on maintenance with the skilled craftspeople during the off-season.

What we’re looking for:

  • Basic computer skills (Excel, Word, web searches)
  • Aptitude for learning new software, specifically AMC’s payroll and hiring software PayCom
  • Excellent Interviewing and Communication skills
  • Knowledge of Cold River Camp Operations preferred
  • Physical Abilities required: Ability to stand or sit while using a computer interface.


Compensation and benefits:

  • Hourly Rate: $25.75 / hour
