Position Summary:

Responsible for day-to-day management of all cellar operations to ensure maximum productivity and efficiency and the high quality of all wines produced. The Operations Manager will have a focus driving a strong safety culture, contributing to positive team dynamics, and identifying and implementing continuous improvement projects to enhance wine quality while improving efficiencies.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of all Stainless, Barrel Cellar, Crush, and warehouse operations.

  • Supervises the implementation of standardized procedures for all Cellar operations including but not limited to, barrel management, stainless cellar, winery sanitation, 5S system, and the Skills Matrix.

  • Is a leader in ensuring employee safety. Ensures safety training schedule is adhered to for Cellar Departments. Participates on winery the Safety Committee. Ensures employee accountability for adherence to safety policies.

  • Leads organizational change management when implementing continuous improvement initiatives in the cellar around safety, quality, productivity, and cost effectiveness.

  • Recommends and implements ongoing process improvements that use state-of-the-art technology and best practices in winemaking to maximize productivity and efficiency and enhance the winery’s position in the industry.

  • Assures Cellar operations meet production volume goals. In collaboration with Winemaking, develops short and long-term work plans to ensure efficient utilization of full time and temporary staff.

  • Makes recommendations and collaborates with the winemaking team in planning and scheduling of all Cellar activities for optimum efficiency and quality.

  • Supervises the Cellar staff, via Cellar Supervisors, helping with determining priorities for daily, weekly, and monthly work.

  • Responsible for creating the Cellar staff personal objectives and performance management program.

  • Ensures that Cellar operations meet winery sanitation standards and equipment is fully functional.

  • Keeps winemaking staff informed of potential production concerns regarding available resources, equipment repairs and bottlenecks.

  • Utilizes lean tools and methods to drive improvement on the floor.

  • Assists in development of the annual operating plan (AOP) and capital expense budgets as it relates to Cellar operations.

  • Assures Cellar operations meet financial, wine quality, and efficiency goals.

  • Develops staffing budgets for regular cellar and crush activities to ensure production schedule can be achieved.

  • Tracks and monitors staffing and overtime and makes recommendations for changes in labor needs.

  • Ensures that adequate supplies, and equipment are on hand to support department functions and for adherence to supply/budget targets.

  • Approves purchases within delegated monetary authority level and approved operating budget.

  • Manages all day-to-day Cellar activities via Cellar Supervisors.

  • Trains and develops Cellar staff in winery operations, including production planning and continual process improvement.

  • Responsible for developing personal and leadership skills in Cellar Supervision.

  • Ensures employees in cellar staff have development plans and reviews them with supervision to enhance employee morale, job satisfaction and the work environment.

  • Develops strong relationship with winemaking team and helps ensure cohesive working relationship among the winemaking and operations employees.

  • Demonstrates leadership and professionalism and serves as a role model for all employees onsite.

  • Plays an instrumental role in the development of a company culture that is conducive to maximizing productivity and efficiency, promoting open communication, teamwork and a spirit of cooperation and effective management and employee relations.

  • Responsible for compliance with CBI sustainability policies and practices which are economically viable, socially acceptable, and environmentally sound. This is done by supporting programs at each location for conservation, energy efficiency, and recycling, which are critical for our operations to achieve tangible environmental results.

Core Qualifications:

  • BA or BS in Engineering (mechanical, chemical, or industrial engineering), Wine (viticulture, enology), or equivalent work experience.

  • 2-5 years of Supervisory and/or Management experience.

  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment.

  • Strong safety mindset.

  • Experience with personnel supervision, personnel development, operational scheduling, facility maintenance, financial planning, procedural development.

  • Understanding on how to build and manage a staffing plan.

  • Good supervisory, teamwork and organizational skills.

  • Excellent (English) verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Winery, brewing, or distilling experience.

  • Spanish proficiency.

  • Knowledge of safety regulations as they pertain to the wine industry.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Works outdoors/indoors

  • Works in warm/cold climates

  • Works in high places

  • Works on wet surfaces

  • Is exposed to loud noise, fumes and/or toxic chemicals

  • Works near moving, mechanical parts and fork truck traffic

  • Able to work flexible schedule to support business – primarily during the harvest season.

  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time and work on a computer for extended periods.

  • Travel Required: 0 – 5%

The salary range for this role is:

$91,100.00 - $139,500.00

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs.
