POSITION SUMMARY:

This is an exempt position that oversees numerous projects which benefit Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami, Inc. The incumbent in this position will primarily be responsible for organizing various tasks related to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Operation Rice Bowl, and Social Advocacy. The primary goal of this position is to guide and support the development of intentional strategies and interventions to respond to the needs of the local church in Monroe County and to provide formation to the people of those parishes so that the sustainable growth of social and pastoral ministries will be possible.

In practice, this position is to assist parishes to assess the needs, goals, and resources which are present in their specific situation and to support the development of appropriate responses, programs and activities to facilitate the delivery of various social and pastoral services in the Monroe County Deanery. These services include, but are not limited to, the following: housing, food, clothing, immigration, counseling, and employment. The incumbent in this position must be capable of demonstrating sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.

Duties and Responsibilities

Parish Social Ministries

· Works with parishes to help identify social and pastoral needs within the parish and its local community.

· Empowers parishes to fulfill the church’s mission of justice and reconciliation through an organized response to identified social and pastoral needs.

· Provides resources, formation, and educational opportunities for the Catholic community in the areas of Catholic social teaching, issues relating to the social mission of the Church, and strategies equipping parishioners to develop social and pastoral responses.

· Acts as a liaison, source of information, and assistance to clergy, staff and parishioners to respond to presenting needs.

· Engages in outreach activities in the community for the purposes of identifying and developing responses to meet the needs and gaps in services of the most vulnerable members of the community.

· Integrates the components of service, education, prayer, advocacy and action as indicated to address issues and identify areas of need.

  • Coordinates a program containing service, education, advocacy and action components to address the identified needs.

· Networks and collaborates with community groups and activities commensurate with furthering the social mission of the church and the common good.

· Administer funds and contributions related to this program.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development

· Builds relationships with CCHD funded organizations and other community groups.

· Coordinates, monitors and evaluates the CCHD grant process with USCCB staff and local community groups.

· Promotes and coordinates the annual CCHD collection in the Archdiocese of Miami.

Catholic Relief Services

· Annually, coordinates and promotes the Operation Rice Bowl Collection in the Archdiocese.

· Ensures that all parish donations for Operation Rice Bowl are appropriately submitted and reconciled.

Social Advocacy

· Educates Catholics in the Archdiocese of Miami about Catholic Social Teaching, the works of Catholic Charities, Catholic Relief Services, and Caritas.

· Engages parishioners in local and global Catholic social advocacy issues and programs.

· Offers training or referrals to training resources on topics salient to our Catholic Social Mission.

· Assists in the response to domestic and international emergencies.

· Collaborates with other offices in the Archdiocese to advance the work of social advocacy.

Direct Services

  • Provides services and referral for emergency financial assistance and other identified needs.
  • Provides information, referrals and pre-counseling services.
  • Provides crisis intervention and conflict resolution services as needed.

· Acts as an advocate with public agencies to obtain benefits, services, etc. for consumers.

· Is actively involved in networking with civic, state, ecumenical groups and individuals to obtain needed goods and services.

Physical Demands:

  • Extensive daily travel required throughout Monroe County.
  • Evening, night and weekend work required.
  • Work functions are sedentary in nature.
  • May require occasions when lifting, standing and stooping are needed.

Educational & Experiential Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Knowledge of Catholic Social Teaching and a basic understanding of Catholic Theology.
  • Knowledge of the dynamics of parish and church life.
  • A clear understanding of the differences between direct services, advocacy and social action.

Reporting to this position:

· No staff
