The Assistant Director at Camp DREAM will be responsible for supporting our Camp Director, Program Coordinators, and all Camp DREAM summer staff in their efforts to meet our overarching mission of ensuring a safe, fun, enriching overnight camp experience at our Camp DREAM property to the youth we serve who come from Vermont, Boston, and Philadelphia. This is a leadership role that will involve planning and support of all camp activities and happenings.

Objectives of service as the Assistant Camp Director:

  • Help lead staff training during member orientation
  • Proactively communicate with caregivers and youth to prepare them for their week at camp.
  • Participate in weekly planning sessions with the Camp DREAM team of counselors to prepare for the weeks ahead. This will involve designating individual responsibilities, debriefing any previous week’s challenges with a growth mindset, and establishing rapport within the team.
  • Support the director and counselor team throughout the week with any challenges that may arise as it relates to youth behavior, cabin dynamics, programming, and more.
  • Oversee programming and camp activities and be involved on the ground in supporting and leading those activities on a daily basis.

The Experience of the Assistant Camp Director:

  • As an Assistant Camp Director, you’ll be an all around support for the needs of camp - particularly as it relates to programming, planning, and coordination.
  • You will serve closely with the Camp Director to ensure cohesion across camp staff, while creating a collaborative and solution-oriented work environment for everyone at Camp DREAM.
  • The Assistant Director’s primary responsibility will be supporting the logistics of camp. This includes camper registration, coordinating transportation for campers, communicating with families, and supporting the cabin counselors during sessions. The assistant director will also be on the ground supporting programming and activities with the youth and counselors.
  • You will be living at our rustic camp DREAM throughout the summer! You will be actively in service from June 1-August 11 and participating in camp sessions on Monday-Friday, with weekends off and the possibility of some occasional weekend responsibilities (Sunday evening team meetings, etc.). There is the option to begin service in early May to support pre-camp planning.

Required Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in leadership positions with peers
  • Experience in a camp environment (either as a camper or camp staff)
  • To be an AmeriCorps member you MUST be 17 years or older, and be a US Citizen, US National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien.
  • Excitement and passion around working with youth.
  • Commitment to the entire service term (June 1st-August 11th), which includes ability and willingness to live at camp for the entirety of the term.
  • Commitment to the mission of AmeriCorps and DREAM.
  • Desire to enhance existing skills and develop new skills necessary for service.
  • Commitment to serve as a role model for youth.
  • Elevated awareness of issues of social equity and social justice with a commitment to continued learning as it relates to serving your diverse communities in a manner that is respectful and aware.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with overnight camp environments.
  • Experience and knowledge related to trauma informed behavior management.
  • Ability to swim, lifeguard certification (If not lifeguard certified, certification will be included in your orientation)

Term and Compensation:

    • Dates of service: Mid May (your earliest availability)-August 11, 2023.
  • 60-75 hours per week, 675 total service hours.
  • $791.67 biweekly, $4,500 total (6 pay periods)
    • These are PRE-TAX amounts.

  • AmeriCorps members are also eligible for:

  • If you engage in work-related travel outside of your commute, DREAM will provide reimbursement for mileage.
  • As an AmeriCorps member at DREAM, you will have the additional support of a DREAM AmeriCorps Director to help you navigate your service term and apply for publicly funded programs.

Travel: Staff who meet the driving requirements for DREAM will be expected to assist with camper transportation to and from camp weekly. Drives will be done in pairs, and may be 1-9 hours long. Out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be occasionally expected.


Work environment:
This position primarily operates in an outdoor environment with active children and other service members, for extended periods of time, and in all types of weather and environmental factors (heat, cold, wet, etc.). This role will operate occasionally in an office-type environment and may use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

  • This position requires comfort working in outdoor environments, regardless of the weather. This position can be very active and frequently requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee/member is regularly required to communicate with individuals who talk and hear.
  • The employee/member will occasionally be required to lift and/or move items over 50 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee/member is regularly required to observe and comprehend using vision abilities that include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
