Job description
The Paralegal II will supplement USAO Automated Litigation Support personnel staff in the Criminal and Civil Divisions and will work on special projects as needed.
A Paralegal II performs, but is not limited to the following duties:
- Assist one or more attorneys and provides Paralegal review.
- Organizes files, case materials and other documentary data for investigations, diversions and trials.
- Prepares correspondence; prepares, analyzes and processes a variety of legal documents to include extradition requests, grand jury and trial subpoenas, requests for evidence or testimony, jury instructions, etc.
- Conducts legal research; reviews and verifies citations and legal references on legal documents. Searches for related articles, studies, financial reports, etc., for use of attorneys in the preparation of opinions, briefs, and other legal documents.
- Develops and enters various case materials into a computer database and/or tracking system; Provides litigation case management and organizes cases for court presentation.
- Participates in witness interviews, pre-trial conferences, trial preparations, and notes possible deficiencies or issues in case materials or conflicting testimony.
- Prepares and organizes trial exhibits, such as statistical charts and photographic exhibits.
- Other duties as assigned.
A Paralegal II must meet the following qualifications:
- Undergraduate or Associates Degree or Paralegal Certificate and 3 or more years legal support and trial experience
- Automated litigation support experience
- Paralegal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation system sufficient to perform manual and computer assisted legal research
- Proficient in operating a variety of computer applications, including word processing, database, spreadsheet, and telecommunications
- Ability to analyze, organize and present large volumes of data through the use of common software programs
- Self-motivated and able to work independently, organize evidence and produce written reports
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools
- Ability to use MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Excel, Adobe Acrobat Professional, spreadsheet programs and telecommunications
- The candidate must be able to perform manual and/or computer assisted legal research
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Security Access
This position requires U.S. Citizenship and a 7 (or 10) year minimum background investigation.
