SUMMARY

Parent Liaison’s working under the State of Michigan’s Great Start system actively seek out, connect with and engage parents, families and caregivers in an effort to build a better local early childhood system.

In accordance with the established policies, procedures and practices of Eaton Great Start (EGS) and in conjunction with the Eaton Great Start Collaborative (EGSC) the Parent Liaison will actively seek out, connect with and engage parents, families and caregivers in the Eaton County area. The Parent Liaison will facilitate and Eaton County Parent Coalition and support the work of the Eaton Great Start Collaborative. The Parent Liaison will work to increase the diversity of the opinions, experiences and parent representation by establishing and maintaining relationships with families throughout the County. The Parent Liaison’s work may include but is not limited to; facilitation of meetings, conducting playgroups, attending events, meeting with community members both in person and virtually, providing communication through newsletters, social media, emails, etc. and carrying out the parent-led strategies identified in the Eaton Great Start Strategic Plan. The Parent Liaison will increase parent participation in and knowledge of the local early childhood system.

Parent Liaisons acknowledge that this position does not have a traditional work schedule or conditions. This is a contracted grant-funded position with a primary focus occurring in the Eaton County.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain, support and grow the diverse representation of parent members participating in the Eaton Great Start Parent Coalition.
  • Recruit members to the Parent Coalition, with an emphasis in communities that lack representation on the Eaton Great Start Collaborative and Parent Coalition.
  • Support and encourage parent participation in the Eaton Great Start Collaborative and its workgroups.
  • Assist and mentor parents & Parent Coalition members with questions, concerns, projects they are working on, etc.
  • Monitor the progress of 32P Grant as it pertains to the Parent Liaison, the Parent Coalition, and the Great Start Collaborative responsibilities, budgets and timelines.
  • Support additional grant opportunities that enhance Eaton County’s Great Start Parent Coalition and the Great Start Collaborative.
  • Provide Leadership in at least one Great Start Collaborative Subcommittee, including but not limited to, chairing a subcommittee, taking meeting minutes and supporting the completion of identified objectives.
  • Participate in the Great Start Collaborative, Executive Committee, Advisory Committee and Great Start Parent Coalition meetings. Human Resources JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Provide updates to the Great Start Collaborative regarding the work of the Parent Coalition.
  • Lead regular Parent Coalition meetings. This includes planning, facilitation, and meeting follow-up (meeting minutes, sign-ins, etc.).
  • Provide regular communication to Eaton County families, Eaton County partners and the Eaton County Great Start Collaborative and Parent Coalition regarding the work of the Parent Liaison and the work of the Parent Coalition.
  • Provide Leadership in local community events. Involvement of other Parent Coalition members is strongly encouraged. These events can include, but are not limited to: booths at local community events, events for parents who are interested in joining the Parent Coalition, events that address the Strategic Plan of the GSC, activities designed to support the goals of Great Start Parent Coalition evaluation.
  • Oversee all Parent Coalition events within the community and on social media.
  • Establish networks within existing parent groups in the community to build upon awareness of early childhood supports available in Eaton County.
  • Participate in pre-approved professional development and Regional and State wide meetings and trainings as required. Participate in other GSC activities as appropriate or identified by the GSC Coordinator.
  • Attend and participate in Eaton Great Start Team meetings.
  • Travel may be necessary throughout Eaton County and the local area in order to achieve the duties and responsibilities of the Parent Liaison.
  • Limited travel outside of the County and immediate surrounding area to attend and participate in training and professional development.

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

Required

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year or more experience working in early childhood, family development, or community development.

NOTE: Possession of an Associate’s degree or higher in education, child development, early childhood education, family/community services, social services, or a related field may be substituted for the required minimum experience.

Desired

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, child development, early childhood education, family/community services, social services, or a related field.
  • Parent/guardian of a child (aged birth to twelve years) residing in Eaton County.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of typical child developmental stages, markers, etc.
  • Skill with use of technology to implement work responsibilities.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Skill with organizing work and managing multiple ongoing tasks/projects.
  • Knowledge of the management and use of social media (i.e. for promotion, engagement and communication).
  • Ability to work independently, initiate work and balance a variety of duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide leadership on projects/activities for groups of adults.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality in dealing with all stakeholders.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, children, and parents.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism while reflecting sensitivity to diversity and social/economic circumstances of families receiving services.

  • Position may require work during non traditional business hours.
  • Position requires the employee to hold a valid State of Michigan driver’s license and to provide his/her own transportation for job related travel
  • Position requires regular and predictable attendance at the workplace.
