Park Technician- Forestry and Horticulture
Job description
Position Summary
Plants and maintains public trees, shrubs and herbaceous material according to best practices and performs general maintenance tasks in area of assigned responsibility.
Essential Functions
- Plant and maintain public trees, shrubs, flower gardens and planters throughout the city.
- Landscaping and facilities maintenance including, but not limited to, seeding, sodding, fertilizing, mulching, weeding, pruning, aerating, mowing, weed eating, and edging.
- Performs trash pick-up and playground maintenance in assigned area of responsibility.
- Performs vehicle, equipment, and tool maintenance for work assignments.
- Supports other divisions with special events and projects as needed.
- Plants and maintains public trees according to best practices established through International Society of Arborists and Master Naturalists.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
High School Diploma or GED
Experience
6 months experience in tree care, turf maintenance or landscaping.
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of landscape maintenance procedures.
- Knowledge of tree planting and maintenance procedures.
Ability to:
- Ability to operate tree trimming and park maintenance equipment.
- Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions.
- Ability to follow instructions, safety practices and standard operating procedures in performing assigned tasks.
- Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly
- Ability to work effectively with people regardless of their age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or job type.
- Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
- Ability to learn and use proper techniques in the maintenance of assigned areas.
- Ability to take and follow both verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate with supervisors and peers, both verbally and in writing.
Skills
- Must possess and exhibit the skills necessary to operate assigned tools and equipment in a safe and proper manner.
Special Requirements
- Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test, physical exam and functional capacity test.
- Must possess a valid State of Texas Drivers License Class "C" and good driving record as defined by City policy.
- Must obtain an International Society of Arborist Certified Arborist or Master Naturalist or National Green Infrastructure Certification or National Association of Landscape Professionals Horticultural Technician credential within 6 months of hire.
