KEARNEY YMCA JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Housekeeper/Custodian

Reports to: Head of Housekeeping

Department: Housekeeping

General Function:

Under the direction of the Head of Housekeeping, this person is responsible for keeping the facility clean and ready for use by the members. Thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds come to the Kearney Y to meet their health and wellness goals and participate in YMCA programs. As YMCA Housekeeping Staff, you are essential to creating a clean environment where everyone feels safe and welcome. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

-Ensures Y is attractive and clean by completing all duties listed on the daily schedule and maintains upkeep of assigned area and equipment.

-May perform wet and dust mopping, dusting, trash removal, recycling, window washing, pool cleaning, painting, vacuuming, seasonal activities dealing with lawn care and snow removal, and general cleaning.

- Be available to work evenings and weekends when assigned.

-Operates related motorized and non-motorized equipment.

-Records and reports all needed repairs; repairs as directed.

-Ensures YMCA building and property is secure during shift and report incidents and hazardous conditions to supervisor.

-Replaces soap, paper towels, and other supplies.

-May set up furniture for events.

-Assist other departments, if asked to do so, to help clean up after a program.

- Assist members in their needs

You must be dependable and able to work by yourself. You will need to be here on time and work the shift assigned to you. You need to have a good eye for detail as to be able to spot dirt and clean it without being told. You must also be able to fill a mop bucket, use a mop, and be able to lift and dump the dirty water out of a mop bucket. You must have the ability to use a vacuum cleaner and push a janitor’s cart.

Know How:

This position requires a basic understanding of the nature of the YMCA as a membership organization, the programs associated with membership. This person must possess or be willing to gain knowledge to use the right chemicals and cleaning equipment necessary to do the job. This will require the ability to follow written and verbal orders. He or she must be willing to work with co-workers, and volunteers in the housekeeping department as well as staff in other departments and the members of the YMCA.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

1. Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out essential duties.

2. Ability to erect and stand on ladders and platforms at heights up to 30 feet.

3. Ability to work with paint, cleaning equipment, chemical compounds, solvents, cleaners, and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray, and aerosol forms.

4. Ability to paint, clean equipment, and operate motorized equipment as needed.

5. Ability to work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.

6. Ability to perform essential maintenance to facility or equipment which may involve, but not limited to the following activities: semi – reaching to full-reach overhead; crouching; kneeling; shoveling; carrying, working in narrow and/or confining spaces: underground, overhead, and at ground level; twisting of the waist, shoulders, and legs; and lying on stomach and/or back.
