Overview:
This position supports pathology department.
Responsibilities:
  • Order procedures in Laboratory computer system.
  • Assure proper specimen labeling and storage.
  • Assist Neuropathologist with brain description and dissection.
  • Assist pathologist in dissection and handling of large gross pathology specimens.
  • Perform, under a pathologist's supervision, the following duties related to surgical specimens:
    • Dissection
    • Description (dictation) of the gross findings
    • Trimming and submitting tissues for processing by the Histology Laboratory
  • Verify with the histology technologist all cassettes are present before transport from the Grossing room.
  • Maintain and clean biological cabinets where surgical specimens are dissected.
  • Assist the Pathologists in preparation for teaching conferences by gathering and collecting slides, reports, photographs, clinical information etc.
  • Maintain file of gross photographs, maintain micro slide and kodak chrome teaching collections and maintain departmental library.
  • Arrange for maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Photograph gross specimens.
  • Perform such other duties as may be requested.
Qualifications:
E ducation:
  • College graduate with formal training as a pathology assistant.
Experience:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a Pathology Department.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, required.
  • Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.

Licenses, Certifications:
  • Current NY State Pathologists’ Assistant License required.
Physical Requirements:
  • Consistent with that necessary to work in a variety of patient care and office settings.
  • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
  • Full range of body motion, able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving bodies.
