Job Title: Patient Financial Counselor
Location: Santa Barbara, CA 93105
Duration of Assignment: 3+ months
Work hours: 40 hrs. per week.

Job Description:
JOB PURPOSE
Incumbent coordinates patient financial needs with available resources to ensure that the patient’s financial obligation to the hospital is met.
1. Verifies and updates financial and demographic information in Sunrise System.
Percentage of time: 10 %
2. Accurately posts and balances daily transactions and bank deposits.
Percentage of time: 20 %
3. Communicates with patients and/or employees to notify them of returned checks in a timely manner.
Percentage of time: 10 %
4. Meets established productivity goals according to departmental policy.
Percentage of time: 20 %
5. Prepares bills for secondary payers and submits appropriate documents as requested by insurance companies. Reviews accounts for adjustments and refunds as necessary.
Percentage of time: 20 %
6. Documents all applicable actions in Sunrise System in a timely manner on individual accounts as specified in departmental policy.
Percentage of time: 20 %
Skills:
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Minimum: Basic MS Word and Excel skills. 35 wpm keyboarding/typing speed. 6,000+ sph 10-key (for cashier PFC).
Basic math skills.
Preferred: Advanced knowledge of MS office, including PowerPoint.
YEARS OF RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE
Minimum: Minimum of 1 year in an office environment.
Preferred: Related work experience in a healthcare environment, with a working knowledge of insurance carriers and types of medical coverage.
PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING
Ability to assess relevant information and make appropriate decisions, recognizing when to escalate to Supervisor/Manager for resolution.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Strong interpersonal skills that reflect a positive attitude, with the ability to apply diplomacy and flexibility with patients and work associates, as required.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
The employee communicates effectively. The ability to communicate orally and through written correspondence with patients and third party payors. Bilingual in Spanish as required by the position.
OTHER
Knowledge of collection procedures and basic medical terminology.

Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred: Some college course work

Salary: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
