VMI’s Preston Library is seeking a part-time Patron Services Assistant to work approximately 12 hours per week, up to a maximum of 750 hours per fiscal year. The successful candidate will staff the Library’s service desk on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the academic year, depending on VMI schedules.
Preston Library, with its central location on the VMI Post, welcomes the general public, international scholars, prospective cadets and their families, and VMI alumni, as well as cadets, faculty, and staff. We serve as a community gathering place, a research destination, and a visitor welcome center in addition to providing standard academic library services.
This position involves serving as the public face of the Library by assisting VMI cadets, faculty, staff, and the general public to locate and check out Library materials; to use Library services, spaces, and technology; and to find their way around the building and the VMI Post. Also included will be tasks such as entering patron questions and account updates into Library databases; sorting and shelving Library materials by Library of Congress call number; checking the condition of returned items; and running computerized reports.
The work takes place indoors and involves some light exertion, such as moving book trucks and restocking supplies.
Possibility of reduced / flexible summer hours. This is a part-time position with no benefits included.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High-school diploma.
  • Availability to work stated hours throughout the academic year, except during holiday / furlough periods.
  • Proactive, cheerful, can-do attitude to customer service.
  • Solid experience using Microsoft Office programs (particularly Office 365, Word, and Excel), internet browsers, e-mail, and other software in an office environment.
  • Reasonable level of comfort with technology such as printers, wi-fi, scanners, etc.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Library experience and knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system strongly preferred. Museum or visitor center experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of the VMI Post and VMI traditions helpful.
