Job description
The Manager of Payroll Tax is responsible for ensuring payroll tax accuracy and maintaining compliance with tax regulation compliance for client accounts. The Manager leads and develops a team focusing on accuracy, deadlines and client relations. This position will work directly under the Senior Manager, Payroll Tax and be responsible for providing day-to-day execution and the management of various activities within the tax department as assigned.
Job Responsibilities:
- Train, manage, coach, and evaluate a team of Tax Associates/Specialists with their assigned tasks
- Maintain hands on knowledge of all processes, tasks, and technical aspects of the payroll tax positions within the team
- Ensures the day-to-day operations of the department are maintained and completed in a timely manner in accordance with departmental policies and applicable federal, state, and local laws
- Perform payroll tax compliance functions which can include tax notices, client set up, quarter and year end processing, client services, POA’s, state registrations and client onboarding.
- Communicate with tax agencies and clients to resolve issues with a focus on handling escalated issues
- Analyze multi-state payroll tax data and performs calculations, and ensures that payroll information is reported to federal, state and local agencies
- Responsible for providing team members with substantive, periodic feedback on performance through reviewing casework with a focus on team growth
- Develop, recommend, and lead new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements and efficiency of the Payroll Tax functions.
- Research compliance issues and become a trusted resource to the team and clients
- Participate in the hiring process by conducting interviews, evaluating candidates, and partaking in hiring decisions
- Assist Senior Manager with projects and team initiatives
Education & Experience Requirements:
- 8+ years of experience in payroll tax filings and compliance
- 3+ years of experience leading a team
- Payroll service provider experience preferred
- Industry certification preferred
Job Requirements & Abilities:
- Proven ability to manage payroll tax compliance responsibilities in a high-volume environment
- A comprehensive understanding of payroll tax, which will include local, federal, and multi state tax regulations
- Ability to manage team responsibilities, foster team collaboration and provide training and development
- Exceptional client service skills
- Strong technical skills with payroll software and Excel skills and the ability to learn a new system
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to analyze internal procedures, client needs and compliance regulations to implement highly efficient processes
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to prioritize work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to act with integrity, be proactive with client needs, seek to continuously improve service, constantly focus on professional growth and work collaboratively with the entire team
- Ability to travel to the Chicago home-office a few times a year (company-paid travel!)
