Title: Peer Support Specialist
Hours: 30 hours per week, including occasional nights/weekends
Wage: $25 per hour non-exempt

Position Description: The Peer Support Specialist is the lead programming and outreach staff member, as well as the primary point of contact for recovery support services offered through Pride in Recovery. The successful candidate will need to be independent, mature, and have strong communication and follow-up. Pride in Recovery is a peer-led LGBTQ+ recovery support program. Programming increases community and access to support for LGBTQ+ community members regardless of where they are in the substance use recovery journey. Services provided through Pride in Recovery include, but are not limited to, harm reduction and relapse prevention groups, 1-on-1 recovery coaching, case management/service navigation, and recovery focused community activities and events. This program is a starting point or supplemental resource for recovery and is not meant to replace formal substance use treatment.

The Peer Support Specialist is responsible for a variety of recovery support services for LGBTQ+ individuals in their recovery journey. This position will create spaces of hope and support dedicated to the overall wellness and recovery of LGBTQ+ individuals working through addiction. The Peer Support Specialist will work with program participants to articulate and establish their goals, assess their progress, support the development of effective coping and relapse prevention skills, assist in resource navigation with internal and external providers and referrals, promote community building and advocate for the biopsychosocial needs of participants. This position may be required to attend events outside of normal work hours and will be responsible for other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create, adapt and provide LGBTQ+ competent and responsive recovery support services, including events and activities, to program participants
  • Drive ongoing outreach, communication efforts, and collaboration with prospective participants and community partners to ensure program awareness/engagement
  • Build collaborative relationships that ensure all services are offered in a respectful, inclusive, and professional manner, while managing highly confidential information
  • Facilitate peer-led evidence-based services that help individuals navigate their recovery journey including but not limited to harm reduction, relapse prevention and skills development groups, as well as 1-on-1 recovery coaching sessions
  • Plan and implement recovery centered activities and events in the community with program participants
  • Provide proactive and comprehensive case management to individuals including intake, assessment, wellness plan coordination, and service delivery with focus on entry into medical care, treatment adherence, and harm reduction as needed
  • Care coordination with other staff and providers to ensure best health outcomes for participants during the recovery journey
  • Provide linkages to The Point’s primary services in addition to agency, community, and government services and monitors referral completion including: state health insurance programs, medication assistance programs, and programs such as SSI, SSDI, Medicaid, Medicare, Connect for Health, and housing programs
  • Assure client awareness of OBC programs and community services and advocates for client access to services when needed and available
  • Maintain documentation in client files and enters data into database systems in a timely manner
  • Assess client’s stability and provides referrals to increase level of stability and self-sufficiency
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Peer Support Training Certificate (or willingness to obtain no later than within 6 months of hire)
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends (evening groups and organizational events)
  • Must have lived experience with substance use issues with at least 2 years in recovery
  • Experience in healthcare, psychology, social services, and particularly with LGBTQ+ population highly desired
  • Preference given to applicants who have experience providing case management to populations experiencing chronic health conditions, mental illness, substance abuse, and/or homelessness
  • Ability to work at computer for 2-3 hours at a time, manage interruptions
  • Drivers license and access to reliable transportation required
  • Job offer contingent upon completion of satisfactory background check
  • Bilingual Spanish/English language skills strongly preferred
  • Effective management of highly confidential information
  • Understanding and quality application of Motivational Interviewing
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Friendly and welcoming while maintaining professional boundaries
