What You Will Do

The Perfusionist role assesses, plans and implements the patient care requirements and treatment necessary for patients requiring cardiopulmonary bypass, mechanical circulatory support, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and associated blood conservation or perfusion delivery.

Scope of practice includes cardiopulmonary bypass, extracorporeal support, mechanical circulatory support, and autotransfusion for adult patients. Areas of expertise include major aortic surgery, advanced heart failure, heart transplantation, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, blood conservation, surgical oncology, and complex congenital surgery.

The Perfusionist supports OCS/Transmedics heart procurements, inter-hospital ECMO and VAD transports, and intraoperative apheresis.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Perfusion program or related scientific field or allied health specialty.
  • 3 Years Perfusionist experience.
  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) - American Heart Association -REQUIRED


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree Perfusion program or related scientific field or allied health specialty (Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Medical Technology).
  • ACLS Certification (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - American Heart Association -PREFERRED


Other Qualification Requirements

  • CCP from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) - Required
    Perfusion Licensure from the CA Medical Board - Required


Essential Functions

  • Management of Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB)
    Appropriately assess patient profile and manage CPB.
    Use appropriate equipment/supplies and monitor data based on patient profile (age, condition, procedure).
    Appropriately communicate with open-heart team personnel during procedures.
    Recognize and resolve variances and abnormal situations that may arise.
    Utilize all available safety devices during cardiopulmonary bypass as per departmental policy.
    Demonstrate appropriate clinical vigilance and awareness before, during and after cardiopulmonary bypass.
    Facilitate discussion with health care team which includes medical record review, decisions needed for prime selection, drug and blood additives, techniques of cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Ancillary Perfusion Procedures
    Demonstrate competence and comprehensive knowledge of all ancillary procedures as per departmental policy.
    Competence in devices to include VADs, ECMO, IABP, left heart bypass, VV bypass, and autotransfusion.
    Assess patient profile and manage ancillary procedures by using appropriate equipment and monitoring data.
    Recognize when situations are critical, notify appropriate personnel and assist as needed.
    Troubleshoot all technical devices.
  • Information Management
    Create and maintain accurate and complete electronic records and database information entry.
    Timely documentation and reporting according to departmental standards.
    Maintain patient confidentiality.
    Demonstrate knowledge of Sharp Memorial Hospital Perfusion Services policy and procedures.
  • Teaching and Education
    Assists in ECMO Specialist training course.
    Assists in instructing advanced practice providers and nursing staff who are participating in the care of patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass or ECMO support.
    Provides education and training for the following topics:
    o Intraoperative autotransfusion
    o The intra-aortic balloon pump
    o Ventricular assist devices
    o Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in both VA and VV configurations
    o TAVR support
    o Myocardial protection
