Cordant’s Pharmacist in Charge position leads a pharmacy team in a fast growing organization. St. Matthews pharmacy has a long reputation serving the Midwest. Our unique programs impact patients in a positive way and saves lives. We are looking for an enthusiastic leader who is reliable and collaborative. We are closed on weekends and holidays, so this is a Monday through Friday schedule.

This Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) manages the day-to-day operations of the pharmacy. The PIC maintains accountability for general supervision of the pharmacy staff and provides direct supervision of the processes involved in dispensing medications. St. Matthew pharmacy works directly with physician offices and has a variety of pharmacy delivery protocols that require management. The PIC will also collaborate with physicians and their staff in the care of patients.

The PIC ensures compliance with FDA mandates and self-imposed restrictions on particular drugs, as applicable. The PIC also enforces all federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to drug dispensing and patient privacy, as well as company policies and procedures. The Pharmacist in Charge reports to the Executive Vice President of Pharmacy Services.

The schedule for this position is 7:00am - 12:30pm and 1:30pm - 5:00pm Monday-Friday.
This salary range for this position is between $124,800 - $166,400 based on experience. Relocation may be offered for qualified candidates.

Responsibilities:
Essential Functions:

Prescription Order Review and Clarification (prior to dispensing)
  • Verifies source of prescription
  • Contacts Physician’s offices for clarification or questions on any orders or prescriptions written by the Physician
  • Provides Clinical advice to Physicians regarding medication treatments
  • Obtains any and all information necessary from Physician to ensure accurate and safe dispensing of medications to the patient
  • Resolves prescription discrepancies
  • Manages St. Matthews prescription delivery protocols and processes

Prescription Dispensing
  • Takes prescription orders over the telephone from Physicians or their agents
  • Verifies correct drug is being dispensed and the drug matches the prescription order
  • Verifies correct patient for dispensing
  • Verifies correct route of administration
  • Verifies correct drug dosage and strength
  • Verifies correct administration schedule or time (directions)
  • Includes appropriate manufacturer or other patient education materials with dispensed drugs)
  • Obtains insurance authorizations as required
  • Investigates and manages insurance denials as required
  • Completes quality control and DUR check on prescriptions, ensuring adherence to all policies, procedures and laws
  • Provides patient-specific consultation on all aspects of their medication regimen
  • Maintains appropriate records and computer entry of prescriptions and patient information
  • Documents patient interventions with adequate detail in both clinical and non-clinical records as appropriate
  • Reports adverse events to the appropriate collector, such as MedWatch or a manufacturer, in a timely manner

Managerial Responsibilities
  • Assumes financial responsibility for store; including expense control
  • Assesses revenue and expenditures of store, manage utilization of resources, and work within budget constraints
  • Manages subordinate employees, including Technicians
  • Interviews potential candidates for open subordinate positions
  • Trains new employees in their designated roles to perform to meet the expectations of the company
  • Appraises subordinates performance through a formal review process on an annual basis as designated by Human Resources
  • Corrects behaviors and disciplines employees, as necessary
  • Addresses complaints and resolves issues

Oversight of Pharmacy Safety
  • Responsible for the overall safety and security of the facility and its operations
  • Maintains accountability for general supervision of the pharmacy staff
  • Provides direct supervision of the processes involved in dispensing and preparing medicines
  • Ensures compliance with FDA mandates and self-imposed manufacturer restrictions on particular drugs, as applicable
  • Enforces all federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to drug dispensing and patient privacy, as well as company policies and procedures

Additional Duties:
  • Remains dependable and maintains levels of confidentiality
  • Ensures that patient rights are upheld and supports informed decision making by the patient
  • Establishes and maintains effective professional relationships with prescribers
  • All other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
  • Pharm.D. or BS Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy, required
    • Successful completion of state pharmacy board examination
  • Pharmacist license current and in good standing with the Board of Pharmacy
    • Maintenance of continuing education requirements
  • 3-5 years’ experience in the practice of pharmacy, required
  • 2-3 years’ experience in pharmacy management, preferred
  • Experience dispensing medications prescribed for the treatment of addiction, as well as immunization certification
  • Current knowledge of applicable state/federal pharmacy laws and regulations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to recognize the needs of and express concern for others
  • Knowledge in counseling patients regarding the clinical benefit and use of their customized medication.
  • Expertise in understanding third party plan coverage options for customized medication patients
  • Comprehends federal, state, and local laws and regulations applicable to the practice of pharmacy
  • Familiarity with workflow concepts relating to the practice of specialty retail pharmacy
  • Shows full understanding of controlled substance rules and regulations as dictated by the Drug Enforcement Agency, as well as state and local laws and regulations
  • Detailed understanding of REMS programs relevant to specialty pharmaceutical products
  • Understands the limited distribution process for specialty pharmaceutical products
  • Has sufficient knowledge, training and expertise in pharmacotherapeutics to oversee the pharmacy patient management program
  • Possesses leadership skills and abilities: time management and organizational skills; professionalism; communication skills, both oral and written; ability to prioritize effectively; and ability to delegate effectively
  • Thorough understanding of benefits investigation and pharmacy billing operations for commercial and Medicaid/Medicare members

Physical Requirements:
